I don't know if Nick was serious about trying fencing but I would recommend Epee if so. It's way more custom (the Falco of fencing). Also Slime was right, Melee definitely has more inputs and matchups than fencing since you only fence people using the same weapon as you (there are 3) so it's basically just playing dittos.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I think Slime had a bad take. Combat sports have so many more mechanics than Melee, just because there's ten buttons on a controller that doesn't make it more complicated than stance and footing and everything that's involved in fencing.

Slime's fencing take is the least intelligent thing he's ever said. It's like melee but every player can make as many custom moves as they want, perform them with any possible timing/direction, and every player has a unique hitbox. Not to mention there are three different swords you can use with their own rules

Slime needs to imagine if you could cancel any move at any point in melee, and also change the timing of all moves so they take fewer or more frames to complete. That's just starting to get as complex as fencing/swordfighting

Playing fear& in melee would be brutal. I’ve run into the casual gambit in both melee and ultimate with many people and not a single casual knows what a tech is. It’s like playing basketball against someone who doesn’t know you can contest shots.

The idea that there are more controls in melee than fencing is insane IMO. If you hit one button in melee it does one thing. That thing doesn't change no matter who hits it. In fencing there are an infinite ways of doing a lunge alone and it changes person to person.

I did fencing for a few years in high school. There are so many more moves in fencing than in melee especially for Epee and Saber. Also, camping ledge would be going for toes in Epee. So annoying and you need good footwork and spacing to avoid it.
