Still, as someone in college and thinking about my career for the first time I think what they talked about is really helpful/enlightening about making sure you strike a balance between making money and doing the things you're passionate about. However those things interlink is up to you which is really important to remember. Good stuff

I think Slime could stand to fill a big part of the content hole/vacuum that bigA (rest his soul) left, even though it feels like a very cynical take. While he wouldnt be marketing guy, the content sphere is adjacent enough that he stands to gain a potentially very quick audience spurt.

I feel like it was more so, don’t worry about maximizing the monetization of your dreams. Just put the work in. He even said he was making 50k a year at that time, and in California. No where near well-off. I know listening is hard and it’s easier to feel attacked in some way and project that into a comment to justify it to yourself but this was unnecessary

i'm not sure if this necessarily answers nick's question regarding the ads, but i work for a large makeup corporation that as part of our training is to basically watch ads for products that are new or we're told to push more for customers. these ads are specifically made for our company or other cosmetic companies that are trying to sell their brands. they're not your standard training video, they are sometimes 5+ minute long ads that clearly cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. it's possible that the reason no one seems to be watching those is because they're being sold to other corporations that partner with those brands

I think Nick's right on the money about that type of big spending being low-value for marketing departments, but I'm not 100% sure it translates to it disappearing soon. The conclusion the guys came to about corporations just being full of dumb people is really just true. Thanks to work for a consulting firm I got exposure to the internals at tons of different companies, and this type of low-value spend happens *so often* and for *so many different reasons,* even in examples that are way more cut-and-dry than the big-ish budget ads Nick is describing, and in departments that are way more cost-constrained than marketing. And it'll happen even when people are generally aware that the item is low-value. It's super-resilient; you'll see a category of spending that is CLEARLY low value that nonetheless survives multiple leadership turnovers, heavy budget cuts, etc. (Hell, as a consultant, I was being paid thanks to tons of low value spend.) Happens for a bunch of reasons, like I said, including stuff as simple as "we need to spend out the last of the budget so that it stays the same next year" or "this will look good when I jump ship." Anyways, I'm sure the opportunities Nick is talking about will contract over time as more people come to agree with him that they are low value/as the boomers disappear from the workplace, but I'm not sure it'll happen quickly or that it'll ever totally disappear. But it definitely could happen. I was too young during the recession; maybe that type of situation is enough of a shock or restrains budgets so severely that this stuff actually disappears.

Concerning the thinking about what you're passionate about, I personally think you should never stop doing that. I used to try to plan out everything years in advance and think whatever I go to college for is what I'll be doing for the rest of my life but at some point I realized it's better to just do what you want to do right now, instead of what you think you want to do in 3 years and see where it leads you. It also makes you more flexible to capitalize on unforseen opportunities. That's if you're in a position to be able to do that of course. You got this!

those short story ads definitely exist, and especially for Apple, they make a ton of them and whenever they come out, they used to play them at the beginning of every shift when i used to work at an apple store, so we saw them constantly. For Apple it always came across as more about the brand image than anything, and they have basically infinite money, so it's hard to compare them to everybody else

Actually a really interesting conversation in around the marketing spend. I think some portion of it is internal/business-to-business focused where it's essential just a point of pride for the marketing team or an attempt at winning a marketing award within niche circles. I do think Nick's concerns are partially valid and the trend is certainly displayed in the data of where marketing budgets are going. It does seem to be shifting towards highly specific direct to consumer marketing through influencer marketing as well as tools like facebook/google ads. In addition measuring ROI is getting better allowing management to better see the actual effect of an ad rather than "idk shit looked good and 200,000 people were watching NCIS SVU HD HRA season 15 while during ours spot".

Regarding if the clickbait= more views, I think that its higher numbers but maybe lower retention of fans. Like with faze rug, everytime hes in recomended hes getting a lot more people clicking in, and a smaller amt of ppl being like oh this guy sucks hes lying. I work in a very similar industry to Nick. Myself and my colleagues make high production value, longer form advertisement pieces for brands typically in the bike world. To me, almost all of our efforts feel futile at times because companies will throw tens of thousands of dollars into a film we make for it to be a footnote in a newsletter and then never see the light of day.
