Here is some random stuff ill dump. If you plan on living here, learn Japanese. Doing bureaucratic stuff is SOOO much easier if you can read/speak the language. I came here first as a student, so the school handled all of the city hall/immigrations/contracts for me, but once I moved on to work a big boy job, you're on your own kid. There is next to 0 English resources. I remember a year ago I was trying to call "english support lines" for tax related help, and realized VERY quickly, they don't really speak english and it's just easier to do it in Japanese. In terms of loneliness, it's just Tokyo is kind of a hellscape. Making friends was soooo much easier when I lived in Kansai. People are more open and friendly there. Tokyo, you have to learn a lot of mannerisms quick like picking up when someone is saying No. An example that is very common for foreigners to experience "Let's get coffee sometime!" "Sure, I'll be free in 2 months on a tuesday 5am to 5:30am" this means no. "Let's get coffee" " Oh, im a little bit busy but if I can go I'll let you know(行けたら行く)" this means no.

Wealth gap is pretty big in Japan, the only reason there aren't open riots is because wealth distribution is well managed. I'm an engineer/unofficial translator, my yearly salary is 5mil yen (roughly 50k), after taxes, I take home 4mil. My healthcare is paid by my company and it's very good (compared to the us, I know my italian friend thinks it's okay compared to back home). My rent for a 25sqm apartment in a really nice area in tokyo is 95000 yen ($950) a month and is rent controlled. Yes there are problems living here as pasty white american, but my job is nice, and a lot of adult things that would stress me out like healthcare/retirement fund, etc. Are just so much better here that I can't reasonably want to go back to the US.
