That’s crazy you read my entire comment and understood none of what I said. Temperature, like I said, is related to molecules in a system. The sun is adding energy indirectly via heating the ground. The molecules, either under the shade or in the sun, have around the same energy. An analogy would be a pot of water on the stove. The water, like the air, is all around the same energy. The stove, like the ground, is obviously hotter because they are what is directly being heated by the sun, or stove. When you measure the temp of the water, you don’t put the thermometer directly on the bottom of the pot, just like how you wouldn’t measure temperature by putting the thermometer directly in the sun. Yes, it obviously feels hotter in the sun, but that’s not the question Nick asked.

Hello. Physics major here. Temperature is a measure if the total kinetic energy of all the molecules in a system. The molecules under shade and in direct sunlight is the same, so temperature is the same. The only difference is you feel the direct radiation from the sun. This radiation will make it feel hotter, but the actual temperature is the same because temperature does not depend on the direct sunlight. Temperature comes mainly from the sun hitting the ground and radiating heat to the air. It has less to do with the direct sunlight than it does the air molecules in the area. Thats why NY city is so hot now because of all the concrete absorbing more light than the sand and trees that were there before.

HVAC tech, I have no idea the shade difference, but very often houses that are made cheap/poor a lot of the ducts are undersized. Issues with some rooms being cold and others being hot can be fixed with adding a zoning board with multiple thermostats around the house so everyone is at a comfortable temp. Also the average house temp/ what is considered comfortable year round in 72 degrees.

The Weather Service measures a lot of different data in a bunch of different ways, but I think you are talking about Air temperature which is " temperature of the free air conditions surrounding the station at a height between 4 and 6 feet above ground level.
