It is actually possible to prevent Steam from propagating that you are playing a game. The settings for that are a bit hidden. When you are editing your profile you also get some "Privacy Settings". These let you decide who (if anybody) can see your "Game details".

To be honest, I'm not so sure I'd even install this on steam. Too afraid that this popping up in 'now playing' with the friends list will translate as 'Hey everybody, he's jacking it" :P
