This Week in the Forest #105!

I've been taking some time off for the holidays and playing some games on the side! Most recently I played through Grime! It's a metroidvania souls-like game, one that is SUPER underrated! I haven't heard a thing about it, yet it's one of the only souls-like that actually pushes the genre forward with several of its major mechanics. If those types of games are your cup of tea, I definitely recommend picking it up!
Funny enough, a game like that, and (Potionomics) - have been awesome grounds for inspiration and note taking! There's a lot of things these games have been doing that I'd love to see incorporated in TFOL in some ways. I've written a doc on my observations in how they go about writing characters in Potionomics, and how they go about world building/lore in Grime.
Looking at some amazingly polished games like those, it seems like a mountainous task to incorporate a similar level of design and depth. But it all starts somewhere! Noticing it in the first place is the first step. Studying how these designs are manifested and used, is the next step. Translating and adapting that knowledge to our own game is the last step. TFOL is shaping up to be an awesome canvas for what we have planned, and I'm hoping I can incorporate some concepts I've learned to push it the extra mile!
SO other than all that conceptual shenanigans, I did get to doodling an unrelated lil art piece for the holidays! There's this lil' peppermint cat that has been going around twitter, and she's pretty dang cute, so I had to take a stab at her :>.

Had to winterize the house and care for a very sick cat, and then it was Christmas, so I didn't make much progress on TFOL last week. Back to it this week!! :V
Some good news to report about my dad!! His ALS is still progressing, but earlier this month he and mom moved out of state to a place with better air and living accommodations to soften the next stage of his disease. He also got a new model ventillator which is helping his breathing!
It's been weird not having family together for Christmas after all these years, and there's been a surprising amount of emotion to unpack, but we stay in touch with video calls and it's a more ideal situation for everybody now. I'm up and down but pushing through! Looking forward to whatever adventures the new year brings. ^w^

That's it from our end!
Looks like we'll be late on this month's build. Definitely my fault, I've been pretty behind on assets. The holidays aside, I've been fighting with some mental health crap for a while. We're looking at some new avenues with testosterone supplements, but we'll see how things go!
