So I think the Martian character is ok, he wasn't taken over by the other species. The actual astronaut WAS taken over and he's still on Mars. The Martian took the astronaut's identity to escape Mars and as they were cross cutting between his speech and the stuff happening on Mars, it looks like that species is getting ready to invade Earth. So Earth is really screwed as far as invasions go!
