Even when the overall movie isn't the greatest, I always appreciate a ballsy story decision, like Anakin and the younglings, Wash in Serenity, and Gwen in the Amazing Spiderman sequel. Some movies go too far in the other direction just for shock value, but when an otherwise-decent/ok movie avoids a cliche and manages to hit you harder in the feels than you anticipated while serving the story in a meaningful way, I take that as a win. Okay, maybe Wash was too much... but still... And yeah, a lot of guys' movies hit hard, and I don't think they get enough credit for that. I really can't count the number of times I've seen women surprised to find themselves crying at Star Wars (e.g. Darth Vader's death/redemption ghost), Terminator (2, death of a robot), Iron Man and other major MCU movies (Capt going back for Peggy)... I'll never understand the criticism that guy movies promote the idea that men aren't supposed to feel feelings. Our movies slap(.), and they hurt lol. We're the ones who cry at all of our own flicks lol.
