Ellen Ripley is one of the all-time great protagonists. She's intelligent, competent and capable, it's a shame characters like her are so rare in media nowdays. I'd highly recommend watching the Special Edition of Aliens. The scenes cut for the theatrical release aren't necessarily vital for understanding the plot, but they do provide some heavy context for some actions and motivations.
