Watching this film felt like watching a piece of cinematic history. It's brilliant! The Godfather tells the story of a powerful Italian-American crime family and how they navigate a world of violence and betrayal.
Let me know if you think this is one of the greatest films ever made. Also, do you want me to watch the sequel?

Va fangool in this context is a vulagarism for "f--- off."

Definitely one of the best films of all time, the rawness and storytelling pulls you in from the first scene to the last. I haven’t watched part 2, I vote you watch it.

The cat was a stray wandering around the set and Marlon Brando just picked it up and used it as a prop for the scene. A very well-behaved prop.

Highly recommend checking out the Paramount+ series "The Offer" it is about the making of "The Godfather"!!!!!!!

Last comment before bed: (lol) Who do you all think the title refers to? Vito or Michael? I'm in the Michael camp. I think the title is more a reference to Michael's journey from outsider to insider to heir to Godfather(both literal and figurative). I'm just curious if I'm in the majority or minority with that view. :)

I'm guessing Jax already knows this, but Johnny Fontaine is a thinly veiled reference to Frank Sinatra. And Sinatra was NOT happy about it. When he ran into the author, Mario Puzo, at a restaurant, Sinatra almost started throwing punches.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're excited for this one. Looks like Part II is a must watch!

It's considered the best! I can see why!
Jacqueline
You are probably right about that!

What a great backstory to that character. I thought his nervousness really added something to the film. Looks like I'll be seeing Part II!
Jacqueline
I'd love to watch Part II!
Jacqueline
Haha! That's awesome!

Silly trivia: The cat in the opening scene just wandered onto the set the day of shooting. Coppola picked it up and put in Brando's lap just before they started filming.

Always great to dive in and rewatch this film! I would really enjoy seeing Part II again, too.

"Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes" .... Fun fact, Lenny Montana, who portrayed Luca Brasi, was formerly an enforcer/bodyguard for the Colombo crime family. While a group of mobsters was on the set of “The Godfather” to ensure the film didn't offend their organization, Francis Ford Coppola noticed Lenny Montana and immediately cast him for the role of Luca Brasi. Montana was star struck about working with Marlon Brando and stumbled over his lines for real during the wedding toast for Vito's daughter. Despite the mistake, Brando kept the scene going smoothly. To address the error, Coppola filmed the additional scene, placed earlier in the movie, showing Luca Brasi nervously rehearsing his speech to the Godfather lol. This was an incredible movie. I loved how invested you were right from the first scene. As great as this movie was, count me as one of the people that think Part II is even better. Please react to that as well!

I was so used to "over-the-top" emotional, expressive, sometimes really loud Al Pacino that this movie blew me away. Just for that reason. How he kept so understated. And then that final "Enough!". It shook me.
YYZHawk
Michael shouting "enough!" to Kay at the end of the movie is the first and only time that Michael loses control of his emotions in the entire movie, which makes it ever more poignant!

2:52:00 - Appollonia wouldn't have asked in the first place.

It's literally the Godfather of all mob movies. Can't wait to check out your reaction!

That's good to know!

Part II is a must watch. It's at least as good and many would consider it superior. The third one is optional.
