I recall a famous comment by, I think Deng Xiaping, Mao’s #2 guy. Mao had driven China into the ground with his economic policies and Deng was given the task of overhauling the economy. He brought in some limited free market trading. When Communist hardliners questioned him on ‘were his policies still even Communist?’ Deng replied, “It doesn’t matter if the cat is white or black, so long as it kills mice.” I think that’s Mal’s leadership style. He knows and understands people and does what has to be done to get the job done.
