When I first started playing D&D circa 1979, and into the early 80s, I ran across an attitude of contempt among some gamers for using prepublished adventures and settings. I never got it, and still don't. As I like to say, I don't write all the books I read or produce all the TV and movies I watch. Game products are no different to me in that respect. Plus, they provide touchstones or shared experiences for gamers. And I say all that as someone who ran mostly my own homebrewed settings and adventures. Plus, as you say, the sheer value we get from these prepublished materials is incredible. I often see grousing about the expense, but I just as often see how that, when adjusted for inflation, the modern $50-60 book is not too much more expensive than its 1e counterparts. And the modern books are higher in page count and more profusely illustrated, to boot. Even using them purely as idea mines, they're more than worth the expense.
