"Your Highness Daimyo, the so-called benevolent and kindhearted Lord, has caused so many people to lose their livelihoods and suffer countless disasters."
"And I am willing to give those who have no way out a choice, and you called me a rebel..."
Kumokawa tilted his head, pretending to be puzzled, and said with a smile: "Do you think it's funny?"
"You..." The warrior opened his mouth, speechless for a moment.
But soon he started cursing without caring about anything, repeating the same old things about loyalty and righteousness over and over again.
After hearing the samurai curse the north, traitors and bandit leader, the young boy finally connected the man in front of him, who was like a noble or even gentler than a noble, with the rebellion in the northern part of the Land of Rain that had been publicized in recent days.
In the eyes of the Daimyo of the Land of Rain and others, "Muzan Kumokawa" was once the son of a noble family. After killing his brother and father, he fled to the north in a panic. He has been portrayed as a cruel and ruthless demon.
Ugly, evil, tyrannical...
Words like these are used to describe Kumokawa in order to completely demonize his image and thus cut off the idea of southern civilians fleeing to the north.
Although the person in front of him was completely different from the devil image he had in mind, and was even the opposite of handsome and kind... He still felt a little scared for a moment.
When his family lived a happy and well-fed life and before the village was destroyed, his parents had scolded that only ungrateful and shameless scum would rebel against the daimyo.
But at this moment, everything has been lost, and the boy is a little confused.
"You're looking for death!"
Looking at the warrior who had broken his arms and legs but was still chattering, Asa's tone became cold, but he just took a step forward when Kumokawa beside him reached out to stop him.
Kumokawa didn't say anything, but just looked quietly at the warrior who had little strength left but still wanted to vent his hatred and anger.
The Way of the Samurai is a set of principles that orthodox samurai must strictly abide by. It is a spiritual belief based on virtues such as righteousness, courage, benevolence, courtesy, sincerity, honor, loyalty, and self-denial.
"Justice" is the strictest teaching in the samurai code, requiring samurai to abide by justice and morality.
"Courage" requires warriors to have the spirit of daring to act and perseverance, as well as high martial arts skills.
"Benevolence" prevents a warrior from becoming a militaristic warrior, but instead enables him to possess the virtues of tolerance, love, sympathy and compassion.
"Etiquette" is not just about manners, but also an outward expression of emotion and care for others.
"Sincerity" requires warriors to remain honest and at the same time stay away from temptations from the outside world.
The consciousness of "honor" includes the dignity of personality and a clear awareness of values. It requires a warrior to be willing to give everything for honor, and to have the ability to distinguish right from wrong and maintain patience and perseverance.
"Loyalty" is of supreme importance. It is the bond that exists between people in all kinds of situations. Being loyal to one's master is a creed that a samurai must abide by.
"Self-restraint" requires warriors to restrain their own selfish desires and not let their beliefs be swayed by desires. Only in this way can they serve the monarch and protect the country and the people.
Only by practicing these virtues can a samurai maintain his honor, and this spirit is actually neither good nor evil.
However, after ninjas became the mainstream of the ninja world and samurai became vassals of the nobles, the "Way of the Samurai" went to extremes and gradually became distorted.
If "the father has made a mistake", the son should "admonish the king three times and if he does not listen, then cry and follow him"; if "the king has made a mistake", the minister should "admonish the king three times and if he does not listen, then flee". (Admonish - To tell somebody firmly that you do not approve of something that he/she has done)
However, the warriors attached more and more importance to "honor", "self-discipline" and "loyalty", and the rules between the monarch and his subjects, and ignored righteousness, courage, benevolence, courtesy and sincerity. Even if the monarch was tyrannical and unjust, the subjects had to do their best.
There is no doubt that this idea goes against orthodoxy.
"Poor, stupid guy, full of hatred and anger for no reason."
Kumokawa narrowed his eyes and spoke in a normal tone: "This selfless tool that helps the tyrants do evil has only value in dying with those nobles."
After saying this, he stopped looking at the warrior and turned to look at the young man.
"Hey, kid."
Asa, who was wearing a black robe, walked over, took out a purse from his pocket, handed it to the boy and said coldly: "Take the travel expenses, go back home with those people and hide, don't come out again."
But the boy, whose face was covered in mud and who had only a few rags on his body, just looked at him, silently looking up at the cold and hard face.
"Ryuu." The young man suddenly said.
"...What?" Asa was stunned for a moment before he realized that he was talking about his name. He frowned and asked impatiently, "Why don't you continue?"
"Sir, our village has been destroyed." The young man "Ryuu" said in a calm tone.
Asa was slightly stunned, and then remained silent for a moment before continuing: "It doesn't matter if the village is destroyed. Home is where your family is. This money is enough for you to find a safe place and build a new village."
"Sir, my parents have died under the pressure of that nobleman. My sister was also captured by the nobleman's warriors not long ago. My brother chased them and had his limbs broken and thrown out. He didn't survive either."
There was a kind of heart-pounding calmness, or rather, numbness, on Ryuu's face.
"Thank you, you are a good person, different from those beasts in human skin, but..."
Looking at Asa's slightly dazed face, Ryuu stretched out his right hand with a broken index finger and pushed the purse in front of him back: "I don't need it anymore."
Hearing this, Asa fell silent for a moment.
Hasn't the Sunagakure Village army been repelled? How did the southern part of the Land of Rain come to this point?
He originally thought that the invasion of a great power was the culprit for all the tragedies, but now it seems that, at least, it is not entirely the case...
If there was no Lord Kumokawa in the northern part of the Land of Rain, would it have ended up like the southern part of the Land of Rain now?
Of course it will, after all, it’s just a river between them, and it was Kumokawa that turned the river into a natural barrier.
"Your name is Ryuu, right?"
While Asa was silent, Kumokawa walked over, pointed at the samurai with broken arms and legs, looked at Ryuu and asked, "Do you dare to take him to the daimyo's mansion and say hello to him for me?"
Ryuu was stunned for a moment, staring into those dark blue eyes. He seemed to be thinking a lot, yet it seemed as if he was thinking nothing.
Finally, he staggered to his feet and sneered, "my life is now worthless, what is there to be afraid of?"
"Okay." Kumokawa's mouth curved deeper, he turned his head to look into the shadows, and said with a smile, "Yoshitaka, it's your turn to go."
As soon as he finished speaking, Yoshitaka walked out of the shadows in silence, his hand on the dagger at his waist, his eyes as cold as rain.
"I will obey your command."
He responded, met Ryuu's gaze, and when their eyes met, he sneered, "Little boy, don't get scared and pee your pants when you see blood there."
——————————
At the same time, at the border station between the Land of Rain and the Land of Fire.
The rain in the dark night was pouring down on the tent. Except for a small corner illuminated by a tall lamp, the rest of the camp was completely dark and nothing could be seen.
Hanzo, with a somewhat haggard face, stood in front of the window in the tent. Through the thin transparent plastic window, he could see the rain falling like a waterfall, which was blown like smoke and fog by the strong wind.
Hanzo looked down at the small basket of food on the ground. For a moment, anger, guilt, humiliation, fear... and other similar emotions all surged into his heart.
How can this little bit of food, which is just a day's ration for Rain Ninja, feed a living person?
On the way after leaving the old man without saying goodbye, he saw too many things that he had once ignored.
He looked toward the town and saw that the stone-walled houses that had once been prosperous and staffed by countless craftsmen were now in ruins.
He looked toward the river and saw that the place that was once full of life and joy had been completely submerged by the river that brought prosperity.
He saw that the once busy port was now in ruins from the flames of war, that the few wheat fields that were once there had collapsed, and that the civilians he had rescued from the Sunagakure Village had starved to death on the roadside.
He didn't even dare to stop and could only keep running and walking, almost in an escaping state, until he returned to the border station.
Has the Land of Rain come to this?
What was the purpose of his efforts so far? What has changed?
Hanzo, who dared to face the Sunagakure troops, now dared not even leave the tent because he did not dare to see the civilians, fearing their miserable appearance.
The number of civilians dying now is far greater than when Musashi was in charge of the Amegakure Village. Countless civilians have starved to death due to the increasingly heavy taxes.
Of course he knew what caused all this.
It's the stalemate in the war, the resources being consumed, the flesh and blood being squeezed...
Musashi once said: You can't save everyone.
Hanzo understood, but he didn't know that more people would die because of him.
He told himself that this was a necessary sacrifice, told himself that this was the pain that must be experienced to end the war. As long as the war was ended, he could be on an equal footing with the great powers. Only in this way could the Land of Rain achieve lasting peace.
However, Hanzo overestimated himself.
Perhaps it is influenced by the special geographical environment, or perhaps it is influenced by the atmosphere of the entire country.
In the ninja world, there is only one consensus regarding the ninjas of the Amegakure Village.
——“small-minded”.
Even though Hanzo possesses powerful strength that is not comparable to that of a ninja from a small country, he still cannot escape the influence of the atmosphere of his surroundings.
Just like the weapon he used, called "scythe".
No matter how sharp it is in Hanzo's hands, it cannot change the fact that it evolved from a farm tool.
As a warrior who adheres to righteousness, courage, benevolence, courtesy and honesty, he cannot take all this for granted as a sacrifice. The back that he once thought was strong and broad cannot bear the weight of hundreds of thousands of extremely heavy hopes.
What if I lose?
If I lose, how can I face those people who admire me?
If we lose, how can we be righteous to those who starve to death because of the increased taxes?
If he loses, will he go from being a hero admired by everyone to a sinner despised by everyone?
Fear, trembling, timidity, shrinking...
If he had not rebelled against the great power out of rage, perhaps the war would have ended earlier, and perhaps so many people would not have died in the Land of Rain?
Hanzo couldn't help but have such thoughts in his mind.
"Lord Hanzo."
Just as Hanzo was distracted, a cautious voice suddenly came from behind him.
Hanzo came back to his senses, quickly suppressed the timidity on his face, turned to look at the one-eyed rain ninja behind him, and asked in a normal tone: "What's the matter?"
"The Konoha team escorting resources has arrived." The one-eyed Rain Ninja said with his head down.
Hearing this, Hanzo was stunned for a moment, and then his expression gradually became cold.
Yes.
At this moment, he could no longer afford to retreat.
If he retreats now, everyone's sacrifice will be in vain, which scares him more than death.
"Then let's go see what Konoha is up to."
Hanzo said coldly, the coldness in his words was like a hammer hammering a nail into the table. As he stepped out of the tent, a thunderclap like the sound of a war drum rang out in the sky.
Boom! !
A huge cave seemed to have cracked open in the gray sky. A flash of lightning cut through the darkness and illuminated the world. Bean-sized raindrops poured down from the cave, forming criss-crossing channels on the ground.
Accompanied by thunder, the rain seemed to be getting heavier and more intense, and the sound of the wind was mixed with the rumble of thunder.
Following hundreds of Rain Ninjas, Hanzo arrived at the border between the Land of Rain and the Land of Fire, and looked up at two figures in the rain in the distance.
That is Tsunade of Konohagakure, and Chiyo of Sunagakure.
boom!!
Fires rose in the camp behind Hanzo, and the roar of the explosive tags shattered the rain curtain, marking the beginning of this premeditated attack.
"Hanzo, that's enough. Just surrender!"
Chiyo's voice penetrated the rain and reached Hanzo's ears clearly.
Feeling the murderous intent coming from the front along with the cold rain, Hanzo, who was wearing a gas mask and holding a scythe in his hand, also understood.
The long light yellow hair fluttered in the wind and rain, and at this moment Hanzo calmed down instead.
"The Land of Wind and the Land of Fire have joined forces... You big nations won't even give us a chance to survive?" Hanzo slowly raised his hand, took off the mask on his face, and whispered, "If that's the case..."
Before he finished speaking, ripples appeared in the water beneath his feet and he disappeared from everyone's sight in an instant at an almost silent and terrifying speed.
At the same time, scarlet chakra filled with a violent aura surged out of Tsunade's body, who had been silent all this time. Her originally orange-yellow pupils instantly shrank into fox-like vertical pupils.
BANG!!
The scythe swept towards Tsunade's neck, but was blocked by the dark red chakra fist. The moment the two collided, sparks bloomed luxuriantly at the point of impact.
The firelight separated the two people on the left and right like a wall. Hanzo didn't know whether he was talking to himself or to Tsunade in front of him, and whispered: "Then die here."
Perhaps, dying on the battlefield is their best outcome.
