Ah, thank you for the nudge! I have spent much more time thinking about IR now, and I have somewhat more coherent thoughts on the matter. I should write them up at some point here. I see two key differences between the proposed design, and incremental reading, as far as reading comprehension goes: 1. Diagnosis: If a reader skims over an important passage and fails to extract it in SuperMemo, it will simply be lost. 2. Remediation: Suppose that a passage containing a comprehension gap is extracted in SuperMemo. When the reader returns to the passage, it will be presented "out of context"; they'll see just the segment extracted. Will the user be able to remediate their comprehension gap without being able to "scroll back" in the text? In many cases, that will be a matter of luck.

Some thoughts after reading this post: - The highlight-driven design is approaching augmented incremental reading. Highlighting is similar to extracting in SuperMemo. - IR just delays the comprehension gap detection into subsequent repetitions where the learner will re-read the article or extraction. - Due to various prior knowledge background of learners, it's hard to help all learners find their comprehension gaps, especially when the gaps are out of the article. By the way, I remember that you said you want to learn more about incremental reading to criticize it fully in the conversation with SuperMemo.wiki community. I'm also interested in your perspective about IR.

You mentioned highlighting a discussion with a friend in your journal to continue grappling with it. I'm having trouble seeing how the format of a spaced repetition prompt/answer could support that experience. Could you give an example?

Fascinating proposal! A few thoughts and questions:
