QR codes might be worth a try for embedding prompts in PDFs, print outs, etc. Maybe scanning codes would introduce too much friction...but maybe not. I find that when I use my phone camera app, it is a bit slow to "notice" the QR code and fiddly to click the link. But apps that have QR readers built into them often detect and read the codes almost instantly when I just wave the phone in the general direction.

Fun to peek into your process—thanks for sharing!

For what it's worth, I do nearly all my reading on iPad or MacBook. Over the years I've refined my setup quite a bit. Details here: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/ueQ9zBkmYN2KfQQGd/my-setup-for-reading-highlighting-and-annotation Pessimistic take: a big reason I've gone digital is that I travel so much that physical books are very impractical. I'd say it is quite likely that when I finally settle down somewhere, I will start doing >50% of my reading with physical books. I expect I'll still do a lot of inspectional reading digitally: it's so much faster and cheaper to download a book from Libgen. I imagine a standard flow would be inspect many books, then buy physical copy of the ones I want to explore further.

Ah, thank you! I'd been collecting notes for AR+Orbit concepts but had missed this one. 🙌

Joyful surprises indeed, Andy! The point about bringing spaced repetition to where reading (and information consumption/processing) happens made me think about the (obvious?) idea of "what if we just AR-ed Orbit?" A quick Google Scholar search for "spaced repetition augmented reality" brought up this delightful concept in a work-in-progress demo: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3386527.3406762 (Locabulary: A Context Sensitive Mixed Reality Flashcard Alternative for Second Language Learning)
