Thanks for this kind question. I've talked about this some in interviews, but unfortunately my answers are scattered all over the place, and I don't have a good URL I can point you at, particularly for getting-started-like references. You might find https://andymatuschak.org/2020/ helps a little. The very short version of what led me down this path: reading the work of pioneers Alan Kay, Douglas Engelbart, Ivan Sutherland; then intersecting that with the educational ideas of Seymour Papert and the modern dynamic media ideas of Bret Victor. How I went about it: research is, alas, mostly taught through apprenticeship. I was fortunate to have mentors who have helped me a great deal as I slowly built those skills. There are some classic texts on the subject (e.g. Hamming's "The Art of Doing Science and Engineering"), but I think they're best seen as supporting material to a practice with a mentor. If I were interested in a different topic, I would have just gone to grad school; but I don't like how my interests are typically represented in academic HCI, so I've had to find another way.

Very nice post! Happy to be able to contribute to your research. Wondering if you’ve written about shifting from a SE to being a researcher. I’d be interested to know what led you down your path as well as some practical instruction on getting started at research, or at least the resources you used to get where you are today.

Thanks for that kind thought—you're right that I've been timid here. I've been doing this indirectly, by ~quarterly sharing a piece of writing which includes that phrase at the top/bottom… but I've not come out and asked directly. I'll try it next quarter!

Hi Andy! As a proud supporter who wants to see you thrive with this model, I'll offer the following: I'm connecting a few dots from your post here. Your system resembles NPR-style warm fuzzies, and you mention their pledge drives, but as far as I know you do nothing of the sort! I understand the reticence to commercialize or do "growth marketing", but *once* every 3 months you could post on twitter along the lines of "My research is funded by viewers like you. If you want to support my work, please consider supporting me on Patreon" I think that would have zero ick (it's genuine!) and could move the needle. People prolly need to be told every once in a while!

That's very kind—thank you!

Love it, Andy. These are the first-ever honest thoughts I have read on the internet. As a result of watching your office hours, a lot of my habits as a product manager changed, a feeling I cannot describe. It compounds over time. Thanks, men! You are awesome :)

What a heart-warming and genuine letter. Makes me even happier to support your explorations 🙏

Unrelated to the post - I really love this format. I can't read while I'm cleaning my house but I can listen!

I'm glad to fund your fantastic project on tools of thought, especially the mnemonic medium. The number of knowledge spreading on the internet is vast, but learning is still hard work. Too many blogs attempt to teach how to learn, which makes it more confusing. I hope an excellent tool could unload the burden of learners and make effective learning obvious. I also want to develop a tool to make it happen, but my work costs a lot of time. And my expertise is focused on spaced repetition algorithms. I contribute my spare time to Anki's new algorithm.
