Boot... and Boot Again!

I have a complicated relationship with reboots of famous movies and TV shows. On one hand, I love seeing a new or updated take on a show. The 2003 remake of "Battlestar Galactica" was something I enjoyed a lot-- although I also can admit that, if I had been the producer in charge, I would have done it differently.
A lot of reboots and remakes simply try to update the look of the movie with more modern special effects. The 2009 reboot of "Dawn of the Dead" did fulfill this, with newer, faster, and more gross-looking zombies, but many felt that it lost some of the interesting social commentary that went with George Romero's original and made it into nothing more than another garden variety action piece.
A lot of reboots, to me, are what Sergeant Saltee says: vanity pieces by people who want to put their own stamp on a childhood favorite. In that case, they become little more than vanity projects, hounding for attention, and sometimes embarrassing to watch because of that.
While I am open to the idea of reboots as a concept, I think we should concentrate on rebooting shows that had solid ideas, but bad execution. "Valerian" comes to mind, but a big one I'd like to see would be the final "Star Wars" movie. I'd even take a hand at writing the screenplay for that, on the off chance that desperate, drunk producers at Disney's Lucasfilm division are feeling cheeky. I can actually do some pretty good science fiction. Really.
Anyhow, that's it for this one. Not much of a military themed rant perhaps but definitely one related to visual entertainment. Maybe someday, years from now, when someone is rebooting BOHICA Blues to make it "better" I can haunt them.
