I think the sun/light in the album refers to temptation, greed and sin. Just like in the story of original sin, Adam and Eve ate the apple because it was enticing, coated in light and excitement, driving them to sin. In the same way in wake me up, “Sun is never rising” because the sun is always up and never sets in this city of greed. It drives people to sin and darkness. Which is why the weeknd questions “are you real or are you illusion?” As he tries to see through this mirage. This is reinforced in reflections laughing where “the sky’s been a haze”. In Given up on me, weeknd describes how “it keeps calling me back, the sunshine” I don’t think that’s referring to heavenly light but rather the opposite. The tempting light of sin is calling him back to his past self. It’s not until the final track, Hurry up tomorrow, that he breaks past these illusions and becomes one with god. The cyclical nature of the project, transitioning right back into High for this, his first song just further suggests that this tempting light is always going to be enticing no matter what. Sorry for the essay just thought I would share my perspective, excellent analysis by you guys 😁

So I view songs like "Given up on me"and everything from "The Abyss" to the end, being Abel talking to/letting go of the Weeknd, the persona. In the abyss Weeknd is falling into hell as he says bye to his fans. That song explains that the fans kept Weeknd alive. Its so good!

1. The chorus of Reflections Laughing sounds literally like the chorus of the birds pt.1 slowed down 2. If you put crossfade to 5-6 seconds on spotify on the last track of HUT it perfectly transitions into high for this 🤯

I've listened to this shit like 20 times and the thing that makes the most sense to me is Abel finally realizing that The Weeknd is a never ending cycle (like the days of the week) and breaking free and separating himself from it in order to reach 'Tomorrow' (thus why the title track sounds the most like Abel himself talking and it ends with it looping back to the beginning of House of Balloons)
