Chapter 45: A Tinge of Sorrow
🕑 Added 2024-06-02 10:28:07 +0000 UTCEven though it wasn't for the greater good of the country, but merely for the personal bond between brothers, Arthur did his utmost for John.
When it comes to brotherhood, there's always a price to pay. So, when Arthur rushed out, he didn't expect to come back alive.
Without any hope of survival, Arthur was still very afraid, so scared that his hands were shaking.
Bent over, he rushed towards John at the fastest speed. Suddenly tripping, Arthur lost his balance and fell forward.
Falling to the ground, Arthur quickly got up on his hands and feet and continued towards the guerrilla camp.
The camp was very close; Arthur ran about twenty or thirty meters to the edge of the bushes, then rushed into the camp.
Arthur was fifty meters away from John, with about a dozen trees in between. In the rainforest camp, it was naturally impossible to cut down all the trees, as that would remove the barrier protecting the camp.
So far, these trees have provided Arthur with cover. Because the sunlight could barely penetrate the canopy, the light was somewhat dim, and the tree trunks could also serve as cover, blocking the line of sight.
There were often people moving around the camp, so there were no obstructing plants on the ground, allowing Arthur to speed up.
Although no sound was made, the guards still noticed Arthur. A sentry holding a gun suddenly shouted and raised his gun towards Arthur.
While running, Arthur also raised his handgun towards the sentry who had spotted him.
It was like a dream to try to hit someone from thirty to forty meters away while running, but after firing a shot, the sentry aiming at him fell.
No time to be happy or surprised, Arthur continued towards John. He then watched as the two enemies beside John almost simultaneously fell to the ground.
Arthur didn't look back, but he knew the Captain hadn't left, nor had Rubber and the others. They were covering him and had successfully cleared a path for him, which reassured him.
The closest enemy was less than a hundred meters away, and the farthest was less than a hundred and fifty meters. This was the range where assault rifles could exert their maximum power, and the two AK rifles could provide enough accuracy to clear obstacles in Arthur's path.
Now Arthur stood up straight and ran. Despite holding a gun, he couldn't aim steadily while running.
Two sentries shouted and raised their guns at Arthur, but before they could shoot, they immediately collapsed to the ground.
Gunshots rang out, continuous gunshots. The fourth sentry, and the fifth sentry, fell one after another amidst the gunfire.
His hands no longer shook, and his legs, which had felt heavy before, now had strength. Arthur didn't try to fire while running, so he accelerated again.
Suddenly accelerating, Arthur heard gunshots beside him. He turned his head and saw a man in a green military uniform firing at him.
Arthur, sideways to the enemy, instinctively bent over, then swung his right arm upward and fired a shot while running.
The enemy's head suddenly tilted back, the gun in his hand fell to the ground, and he grabbed the tree beside him, but then slowly slid down, leaning against the tree without moving.
Arthur kept running, not even looking to see if he had hit the enemy or if his comrade had taken out the enemy for him. He didn't know if he had shot the enemy or if his comrade had, but the key was that he hadn't died yet, and the enemy who had fired at him was dead.
At this moment, Arthur suddenly heard a voice in his ear.
"Enemy at ten o'clock! Enemy at ten o'clock is hiding, and we can't deal with him!"
Frank was yelling on the radio. Arthur looked up to the left front, but a large tree blocked his line of sight. After the trunk flashed by, he could see a person hiding behind the wall of a wooden hut firing at him.
The enemy was on the left this time, but Arthur couldn't stop because he was running too fast. He could only hold the gun horizontally to his chest and, while running, use one hand to fire successive shots at the enemy without aiming.
It would be a miracle if he could hit anything like this.
But today, miracles seemed possible.
Arthur didn't know how many bullets he had fired, but he did see the enemy behind the wooden hut suddenly fall to the ground and stop moving.
Arthur then looked back at John and saw him struggling to crawl on the ground. He was not bound, so he was able to reach the rifle in the enemy's hands and then lay on the ground and began to shoot.
Arthur's running speed was still good; he could run a hundred meters in about twelve seconds. His starting point was a little over a hundred meters from John. Although he needed to fire while running and the ground was complex, it still only took Arthur about ten seconds to run to John.
The enemy must have been on guard to some extent, but not to the point of being fully prepared. The attack was sudden, and as a result, the enemy couldn't mount a particularly effective counterattack.
Arthur rushed to John's side, where John was shooting towards the wooden hut he had just left.
As Arthur bent down to try to help John up, John's first words were, "Are you crazy?"
John's eyes were full of shock, but more than that, they were filled with joy.
Arthur didn't have time to answer because someone in the wooden hut started shooting at them. With his left hand grabbing the collar of John's clothes, Arthur raised his gun with his right hand towards the blurry figures inside the hut and started shooting.
After firing a few shots, the handgun ran out of bullets. Arthur immediately pressed the magazine release button and, as the empty magazine dropped, he took out a spare magazine.
He inserted the full magazine into the gun, released the slide, and then, from the corner of his eye, he saw someone with a gun rushing out of the adjacent wooden hut. Arthur swung his hand, and the handgun fired in a sweep.
Arthur's shooting posture would be criticized by shooting club coaches, and if he were in the military, he might even get kicked by a shooting instructor.
"You..."
Bang bang, followed by another shot. The two people rushing out of the wooden hut both fell to the ground as soon as they stepped out.
John had run out of bullets in his rifle. He dropped the rifle, crawled over to another rifle, and pulled the bolt, but before he could start firing, seeing Arthur's shooting method, he couldn't help but shout.
"Don't waste bullets..."
Less than twenty meters away, this was the distance where life and death were determined by gunfire. It was fast-paced, and it would end quickly. Before John finished shouting, Arthur had already taken out the two people who had rushed out of the adjacent wooden hut.
Arthur didn't know if he had shot them. It was very likely that Rubber and George, who were covering him from behind, had shot them. But it didn't matter; the enemies were dead.
John had nothing to say, so he continued to fire continuously at the wooden hut. At the same time, he struggled to say, "There are..."
When Arthur heard the word "inside" referring to the hut, his brain didn't react in time. So he let go of John and rushed towards the hut right in front of him.
His mind was blank, his body full of inexhaustible energy, and all his senses were extremely sensitive. Under the strong external stimulation and the combined action of adrenaline, Arthur's condition was better than ever before, and his physical functions had reached their peak.
Arthur rushed towards the hut. It was less than ten meters away from him. A dead person was lying at the door of the hut, but the inside of the hut was too dark to see clearly.
All he knew was that there seemed to be someone inside, and if he didn't deal with the enemy in the hut, who was so close, he wouldn't be able to escape.
John must have meant the same thing just now, but the enemy in the hut refused to come out after being suppressed, so Arthur could only go in.
Without probing, without evading, Arthur approached the hut from the side of the door and then rushed indirectly.
There were people inside the hut, not just one. They were hiding on both sides of the door, some holding rifles, some holding pistols, and one holding a walkie-talkie shouting, but none of them fired at Arthur.
No one thought that someone would rush in under such circumstances because normal people wouldn't do such a thing.
Arthur seemed to have divine assistance, so in the eyes of the enemy, he was a godsend.
Arthur didn't expect there to be so many people inside the hut, so what else could he do but fire at every person he saw?
One shot, two shots, Arthur didn't stop. His speed was too fast to stop, and in front of him was a long wooden table, made of logs, long and sturdy. So he simply jumped onto it. In mid-air, he spun around, landed on the table with both legs and stabilized himself in a ridiculous posture.
Arthur only used a few standard movements from the first set of international martial arts competition routines, except that he replaced the single knife with a handgun. But his movements dumbfounded everyone present.
The movements had to be fast and stable. Arthur wasn't very strong, but his control over his body was far beyond that of ordinary people. If he couldn't stop after completing a set of movements, what was the point of practicing the routine?
Swinging his arms, and extending the handgun, Arthur continuously pulled the trigger, pouring bullets at every person he saw.
"There are many people inside... Bastards!"
John finally finished speaking, but Arthur had already gone in. John had to stop firing, waiting in extreme shock and anger.
The hut was filled with the sound of intense gunfire, and flames could be seen spewing from the muzzles of the guns. John lay on the ground, struggling to raise his head, an M16 rifle resting on his belly, aimed at the door of the hut, but he dared not fire.
The gunfire rang out and then quickly stopped.
John raised his gun, wanting to fire but hesitating because he couldn't see inside the hut clearly from such a close distance. To avoid accidentally shooting Arthur, he could only shout as loud as he could, "Are... are you dead!"
"No!"
John heard Arthur's reply, and then he saw Arthur walking out of the hut with a gun in one hand, a serious expression on his face, and a fierce demeanor.
His speed was not fast, his walking posture was somewhat awkward, and his facial expression was somewhat fierce. The Arthur who walked out did not look quite normal.
"Are you injured?"
"No!"
"You look like you're injured."
"No! I'm... not!"
Arthur was not injured. He just had a hint of sadness.
For martial artists, the splits were basic skills, but performing a high spin and then a split upon landing was indeed a bit reckless.
The reason? Well, men understand.
