Relativity of Genius - Genius of Relativity
🕑 Added 2023-01-18 09:00:00 +0000 UTC"I'm a genius!" Is what I like to think about myself. Even though my self esteem is very low, I actually think that I'm not that dumb.
But calling yourself a Genius is a bit prententious, I think. It's like calling yourself "cool". You don't do that, others do that. If people think that you're "cool", then you are "cool".
Well, truly thinking about those things makes you neither cool nor a genius, that's for sure. But what's a genius anyway? Someone who accomplishes much in society? Who studies a lot and gets great marks? Or is it a person with great intellect? Is actually a great perception more important than intelligence? Does a genius even go the "normal" route or do need to find unconventional routes to success? And lastly, is the need to accomplish something a requirement? Can you only be a genius if your success can back it up?
What did I accomplish? Well, nothing. I'm on the way of getting good at drawing, but I didn't accomplish anything yet.
So then, let me phrase a counter question. Are all those people who like to share their accomplishments on social media geniuses then? Is every millionaire a genius?
Is Elon Musk a--... well, let's not start that discussion.
Maybe we do need to rule out success as prerequisite, because even the dumbest person in the world can stumble their way into success.
I'm purposefully ignoring the definition wikipedia gives on this by the way, because I want to take this into a new perspective. But to bring everyone on the same page, this is the definition:
"Genius is a characteristic of original and exceptional insight in the performance of some art or endeavor that surpasses expectations, sets new standards for the future, establishes better methods of operation, or remains outside the capabilities of competitors. Genius is associated with intellectual ability and creative productivity, and may refer to a polymath who excels across many subjects."
There is nothing wrong with this definition, it perfectly describes the word. At least the positive connotation associated with it. Because all those traits can be seen from a different angle. But I guess "Evil genius" isn't just a popular trope because it sounds cool.
Here's something interesting. The definition doesn't mention things like success or accomplishments, but they are heavily implied. Then again, it's mostly preference that lets us think about people as geniuses. We all know this one idiot person that never gets anything done but suddenly impresses everyone either by doing something completely unexpected or by showing another side to them you didn't know before.
Now that person may, at least in that moment, appear genius to you. But for them, what may be a revelation to you, could always have been their normal self which got massively underappreciated.
So the term must be completely relative, depending on who uses it and how it's applied. I'm not a genius because I can draw. I'm not even a genius if I can draw extremely good. But I am a genius if people know me for years without knowing that I draw and suddenly surprise them. I've been one of those kids in elementary school who always refused to participate in Art lessons. I hated it. Today, I would impress my former class, they would be astonished, because I was very vocal back then, about not wanting to draw.
The sad thing about this is, someone who is actually at the pinnacle has it way harder to actually surpass those expectations. Many of us expect an established Manga artist to draw godlike while a new upcoming artist will be seen way more as a genius.
To add a bit more context as to why I'm ranting about why people are geniuses and others are not, as a kid I always wanted to be an "Inventor". People called me a genius back then. I've been always building some new inventions back then. I was seven when I got my first microscope and grew crystals, with eight I've already begun to build "complex" machines and program robots. (Well, they were Lego, but you see on all those youtube channels in our recommendations what Lego is capable of.) With ten, I started "programming" games in Microsoft Power point. (Who would have thought that the program is perfectly fine for any form of point & click adventure?)
All this after people had already lost hope because I've been extremely late to speak and walk.
There were way more expectations I broke as a kid, but people always thought of me as some prodigy kid who was always alone, a bit weird and also a bit creepy.
Those notions to "create", I haven't lost. I have an insane urge to create things. But today people call this delusional, look down on me for not doing the same things they do and will gauge my worth by how successful I am. I've never been popular, but there were people who wanted to believe in me. Today, I often feel like I'm a nuisance, better off in some workshop for the disabled because at least, I'm contributing to society.
Well, now I am at least getting something done by starting to accept Requests, building up this very FANBOX and even starting gumroad so at least my grandparents are willing to look me in the face again. Getting your nice Messages also really pumps me up, (you know who you are, your message really made my day!) and even though I haven't accomplished anything yet, I can feel a bit more accomplished.
Maybe we should just accept, that we live in a world where a "genius" in the traditional sense doesn't really exist anymore. But this isn't really bad, because back then, if one out of a million did something great, everyone was calling them a genius. Today it only needs one out of maybe a hundred to impress you, not because those "Geniuses" got even more impressive, but because the people looking out for them are way more perceptive. So, who's the genius now?
As always, don't take this rant too seriously, I'm not actually frustrated because people don't call me genius, I just like to share some insights.
On another note, small health update. I'm chilling right now, taking everything a bit more slow, but still adamant that I don't want to miss an upload because I think that would be unfair to those that support me.

でも、自分のことを「天才」と呼ぶのは、ちょっとおこがましいと思うんです。自分を「かっこいい」と言うようなものです。自分がそうするのではなく、他人がそうする。人が「カッコいい」と思えば、自分も「カッコいい」んです。
まあ、そんなことを真に受けても、カッコよくもないし、天才でもないことは確かなんだけどね。でも、天才ってなんだろう？社会で大きな功績を残した人？たくさん勉強して、いい点数を取る人？それとも優れた知性を持つ人？実は、知性よりも優れた知覚の方が重要なのだろうか？天才は「普通」の道を歩むのか、それとも型破りな成功への道を探す必要があるのか？そして最後に、何かを成し遂げることは必要条件なのでしょうか？成功に裏打ちされたものだけが天才と言えるのか？
私は何を成し遂げたのか。いや、何もしていない。絵がうまくなる道筋はついたが、まだ何も成し遂げていない。
では、逆に質問させてください。じゃあ、SNSで自分の成果をシェアしたがる人はみんな天才なのか？大富豪はみんな天才なのか？
イーロン・マスクは......まあ、その話は置いておいて。
なぜなら、世界で最も愚かな人間でさえ、成功への道につまずくことがあるからです。
ところで、私は新しい視点を取り入れたいので、ウィキペディアの定義を意図的に無視しています。しかし、皆を同じページに集めるために、このような定義があります。
「天才とは、ある芸術や努力のパフォーマンスにおいて、期待を上回り、将来のための新しい基準を設定し、より良い操作方法を確立し、または競合他社の能力の外に残る、独創的で卓越した洞察力の特性である。天才は、知的能力や創造的な生産性と関連しており、多くの科目にわたって秀でた多才を指すこともある。"
この定義に間違いはなく、この言葉を完璧に言い表しています。少なくとも、それに関連するポジティブな意味合いでは。なぜなら、これらの特徴はすべて、別の角度から見ることができるからです。しかし、「邪悪な天才」は、単に響きがかっこいいから人気のある表現ではないのでしょう。
ここで面白いことがあります。この定義では、成功や業績といったものには触れていませんが、それらは大いに示唆されています。そしてまた、私たちが人を天才と考えることができるのは、ほとんどが嗜好です。私たちは皆、何一つ成し遂げられないのに、突然、全く予想外のことをしたり、今まで知らなかった別の一面を見せたりして、皆を感心させるバカな人を知っています。
その人は、少なくともその瞬間は、あなたにとっては天才に見えるかもしれません。しかし、彼らにとっては、あなたにとっては驚きであっても、普段の自分にとっては過小評価であったかもしれないのです。
だから、この言葉は誰がどう使うか、どう適用するかによって、完全に相対化されるに違いない。私は絵が描けるから天才というわけではありません。ものすごく上手に描けても、天才とは言えない。でも、絵を描いていることを知らずに何年も付き合っている人がいて、突然驚かせたら天才だと思う。私は小学校の頃、美術の授業に参加するのをいつも拒否していた子供の一人だ。嫌いだったんです。今日、私がかつてのクラスを感心させると、彼らは驚くだろう。当時、私は絵を描きたくないということを声高に主張していたのだから。
悲しいことに、実際に頂点に立つ人は、その期待を超えることが難しいんです。多くの人は、実績のある漫画家が神のような絵を描くことを期待する一方で、新人の漫画家は天才的な才能があると見なすでしょう。
なぜ天才とそうでない人がいるのか、もう少し詳しく説明すると、僕は子供の頃、ずっと「発明家」になりたかったんです。当時は天才と呼ばれていました。当時はいつも何か新しい発明品を作っていたんです。7歳のときに初めて顕微鏡を手に入れ、結晶を成長させ、8歳のときにはすでに「複雑な」機械を作り、ロボットのプログラミングを始めていました。(レゴで作ったものですが、YouTubeのおすすめチャンネルでレゴの能力を見ることができます）。10歳になると、Microsoft Power pointでゲームを「プログラミング」するようになりました。(このプログラムは、ポイント＆クリック・アドベンチャーのどんな形でも完璧にこなせるなんて、誰が想像できたでしょう？）
私が話すのも歩くのも極端に遅かったので、人々がすでに希望を失っていた後で、このようなことが起こったのです。
子供の頃、私が破った期待はもっとたくさんあったのですが、人々は私をいつも一人でいる天才児、ちょっと変な子、それにちょっと不気味な子だと考えていたのです。
そういう「創る」という意識は、失っていません。私には、ものをつくりたいという異常なまでの衝動があります。でも、現代人はそれを妄想と呼び、自分と同じことをやっていないと見下し、成功するかどうかで自分の価値を判断する。私は決して人気者ではありませんでしたが、私を信じたいと思う人たちはいたのです。今となっては、自分は迷惑な存在で、障害者施設に入ったほうがいい、少なくとも社会に貢献しているのだから、と思うことがよくあります。
今は、Requestを受けたり、このFANBOXを作ったり、Gumroadを始めたりして、少なくとも祖父母は私の顔を見ようと思ってくれているようで、何かを成し遂げつつあります。そして、まだ何も成し遂げてはいないけれど、もう少し達成感を感じることができます。
伝統的な意味での「天才」はもう存在しないのだと、受け入れるべきかもしれません。でも、これは悪いことではありません。昔は、100万人のうちの1人が何か偉大なことをすれば、誰もがその人を天才と呼んでいました。しかし、今では100人に1人の天才がいればいいわけで、それは「天才」がさらにすごい存在になったからではなく、彼らを評価する人たちがより鋭敏になったからです。さて、誰が天才なのでしょうか？
いつものように、この雑談をあまり深刻に受け止めないでください。私は、人から天才と呼ばれないので、実はイライラしているわけではなく、ただ、いくつかの洞察を共有したいだけなのです。
もうひとつ、健康についての小さな報告です。今、私は冷静になって、すべてのことをもう少しゆっくり考えています。しかし、私を支えてくれる人たちに不公平になると思うので、アップロードを逃したくないという気持ちはまだ変わりません。
