"Fast pace" kills our creativity

So for anyone who might view this, be warned: This will be a slow paced blog with much text and not much substance, but this is exactly what this is about.
While I've seen many people writing a Blog of some kind, I don't think that's what I excel in, especially when writing in a Language I'm not that familiar about. Besides, I couldn't upkeep a Blog consistently.
But I like to share thoughts, even if they are utterly useless for the world around me. I'm somewhat of a dreamer who likes to do thought-experiments.
Pacing...
I've thought about how fast-paced everything around me has gotten in the last decade. I'm sure you've noticed too. First, I thought, is this some cycle of life everyone in every generation goes trough? Well, I'm sure the answer is yes, but for entirely different reasons.
People say, they pick up the pace as adults and slow down again when they've grown old. But why exactly is it this way? I think, it's no coincidence this happens in every generation, I also think this doesn't apply to everyone but tends to apply to especially apply to people who think about stuff like this.
Progress is always happening, in every generation. I think this is also the reason for our fast paced lives. Yeah, your great grandma didn't have internet back then, but even then, new things were invented. Long distance communication started with you going there in person, evolved into mail, evolved further into E-mail and now you only need to send a message on a device you've constantly using.
The reason for the pace slowing down when you grow old must be really simple. Most people will stop keeping up with progress at some point. Or does your Grandpa use Discord? (There are always exceptions.) Many people will, at some point in their life, only use things that were available at a certain period in their life and rarely use new things, even if there are innovations on the market that will make your life way easier.
Why do I write about these things?
Why does it matter if life goes faster in every generation and then slows down when we grow older? Well, because it's a dilemma.
I love seeing progress, new inventions fascinate me, but I'm completely tired of the fast pace this world likes to adopt in everything. While I too like to be efficient, I think there's much more lost in getting rid of those "insignificant", inefficient things. Today, we like to create a Meta for everything, and that destroys our freedom, as well as our creativity. And we don't even notice it!
I'm a gamer, an Anime/Manga enjoyer, a writer and, of course, I'm an Artist. So my special field of knowlegde heavily involves the Entertainment industry.
Video on demand
The most obvious example of this fast pace taking over is in Video format. I think many people my age critize TikTok for having no substance. But there are creators who actually do substancial content on that platform. The problem arises when this substance needs to be cut down to fit into a short video. But even Video on demand platforms like youtube have changed over the time to favor shorter content. Things like traditional let's plays rarely exist on there and are mostly cut down to only the highlights. Twitch is the exeption in all this, but I don't really think it's because of the long form content, but because of the para-social interaction with streamers and people in the chat.
Storywriting escpecially has a problem nowadays.
The Shounen Genre in Anime is something that inspired me and something I really enjoy. But the pace in more recent Anime is so incredibly fast, I can't take some of these stories seriously anymore. Today there's a big bad, tomorrow a bigger bad and a day later we already have the biggest bad. But character interactions, real development and those calm moments that make characters feel human are so rare now, if not completely missing in some stories. Because that is "inefficient", "not really needed", "doesn't make great moments".
Some people forget, that great moments in stories need to be built up to. Storywriting today almost feels like eating in a fast food restaurant. And todays culture of binge watching accompanies this analogy perfectly. You get your quick fill of hype, every episode fills you with 20 moments you like inside that specific episode, but directly after, you start the next show to satisfy your hunger. Your body doesn't even really digest what you consumed, because even though it has been cut down to only the most substancial things, the real substance is actually missing.
And I want to say, it's okay if that's your style, I have no right to critizize how you eat and what you eat, but I can objectively say that it's not healthy. Neither the customer in a fast food restaurant consumes healthy, nor the workforce that has to cook under high pressure, makes mistakes and gets barely paid.
But there's one more place where this fast pace is not only dangerous, but also spreading like a plague.
Gaming.
More money for less playtime is how it's done today. And it depends on the genre. If a horror game is only 10 hours long, that's completely okay, because every second NEEDS to be filled with atmosphere.
Optional stuff is mostly, well, optional to include, it's not really "efficient" to include too much post game stuff or optional quests.
Many games today revolve around some gimmick and even if that gimmick is cool and innovative, it's often not realized to its full potential and could have just been a minigame on a Mario party game.
RPG's are often streamlined to be as concise as possible, remove needless grinding, cutting down the story to only it's most substancial parts and will go the extra mile to prevent you from trying creative stuff without using glitches or abusing systems inside the game.
Game development has entered an era of "Meta-development". It needs to be easy to understand, for everyone to be possible to clear the game, be it players with little time on their hands, mobile gamers, new gamers, old gamers, or anything I didn't name.
People like to call this "Accessibility". But this isn't accessibility, it's just following a Meta to get rid of parts that aren't necessary and making a game that everyone can play.
There is a reason why I like playing games with mods, if they have support for that. They can break a "perfectly balanced" game in half, but also enable great creativity.
But the industry isn't really at fault.
There is this overflow of creative media, every month there are like 5 games you want to play, every season 7 anime you are hyped to watch and then you're following like 500 people on Youtube. (And then you're also following me and are reading half a Novel while you could do other things!) It's no wonder content needs to be concise to even get the attention of the average consumer. "Do I want to play a really good game for the next 200 hours?". "Could I be missing out on 20 other games that only take 10 hours to complete?". "Do I even have the time for playing this game?"
There's a reason why every Gacha game has a samey feeling. Login Rewards, daily/weekly/monthly tasks and energy systems are perfectly placed to prevent you from playing too long, but keep you playing a bit every day. And don't get me started on the science of monetary systems.
It feels like the Entertainment Industry is on it's last legs right about now. No, it won't collapse where there will be no more entertainment after, that's not what will be happening, but we as humans will "evolve" and "adapt" to these changes leaving Entertainment in a place where it's not filled with creative Ideas, but controlled by a meta to be as efficient as possible.
As an Artist, I can feel these changes too!
Between thousands of Artists, there is this fear people will forget me, if I would only be uploading once or twice a month. Not only am I competing with thousands of great artists, but also with algorythms and systems that will recommend drawings to other users. So we as artists will also need to stick to a Meta to raise our chances to be seen by people. And for me, it was a good decision, because I've never drawn more consistenly than this year. Looking back, I definitely had much room to improve. I can't say how it will influence my future now, but I know that many artists break with the time, following statistics, analyzing stuff. Because logic isn't what artists are used to using in this creative field.
Going back to the title of this Blog...
The fast pace does not only command how we live our daily life, but also how we consume media, something we do for fun. Consumers just simply adapt to this pace, if there's 1000 things everyday to see, play, read and enjoy, these things have to fit into the freetime we have that day.
On the other hand, The Industry itself has to feed consumers. With how much competition exists today, everyone needs to be "efficient" to have a realistic chance. Why create a video that not only is an hour long, but also took 20 hours to create, when you could create 10 videos that are only 5 minutes long and could all go as viral or even more because statistics show, that humans attention span is getting shorter?
This text entirely goes against this notion that everything has to be "efficient", "short", "concise". But even though I didn't cut anything down, I feel like every paragraph could have been much longer and precise. And if some things are not clear, or really sound generalized, than that's owed to the fact, that this blog should have been triple the length it has now. There is an exception to everything and even an exception for the exception, there's a reason, why "Indie"-stuff tends to be more creative even though they often lack funds and experience.
I will maybe make a follow-up to this if you like me rambling for a bit longer, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask and be ready to be "rewarded" with another big paragraph that maybe explains my thoughts a bit better.

でも、たとえそれが世界にとって全く役に立たないものであっても、考えを共有することは好きです。私は、思考実験をするのが好きな夢想家です。
ペーシング...
この10年間で、私の周りのすべてがどれほど速いペースで進んできたかについて考えてみました。皆さんもお気づきでしょう。まず、これはどの世代も経験する人生のサイクルなのだろうかと考えました。答えはイエスですが、理由はまったく違います。
大人になってからペースが上がり、年を取ってからまたペースが下がると言われています。でも、どうしてなんでしょう？私は、これは偶然ではなく、どの世代にも起こることだと思います。また、これは誰にでも当てはまることではなく、特にこのようなことを考えている人に当てはまる傾向があると思います。
進歩は、どの世代でも必ず起こっている。このことが、私たちの速いペースの生活の理由でもあると思います。曾祖母の時代にはインターネットはありませんでしたが、それでも新しいものが発明されました。遠距離のコミュニケーションは、直接行くことから始まり、メールに進化し、さらにEメールに進化し、今では常に使っているデバイスでメッセージを送るだけでいいのです。
年をとるとペースが落ちる理由は、実に単純なことでしょう。ほとんどの人は、ある時点で進歩についていけなくなるのです。あるいは、あなたのおじいさんはDiscordを使っていますか？(常に例外はあります。) 多くの人は、人生のある時点で、人生のある時期に利用可能だったものだけを使い、たとえあなたの生活をずっと楽にする革新的なものが市場にあったとしても、新しいものをほとんど使わなくなるのです。
なぜ、こんなことを書くのでしょう？
なぜ、世代が変わるごとに生活が速くなり、年をとると遅くなることが問題なのでしょうか？それは、ジレンマがあるからです。
私は進歩を見るのが好きで、新しい発明には魅了されますが、この世界が何にでも採用したがる速いペースには完全に疲れています。私も効率的であることは好きですが、「取るに足らない」非効率的なものを取り除くことで、失うものはもっと多いと思うのです。今日、私たちは何にでもメタを作りたがりますが、それは私たちの自由と創造性を破壊するものです。しかも、それに気づかないんです。
私はゲーマーであり、アニメや漫画のファンであり、作家であり、もちろんアーティストでもあります。そのため、私の専門分野はエンターテインメント業界と深く関わっています。
ビデオ・オン・デマンド
このスピード感を最も端的に表しているのが、ビデオフォーマットです。TikTokは、私の年代では「中身がない」と批判されることが多いと思います。しかし、そのプラットフォームで実際に実質的なコンテンツを作っているクリエイターがいる。問題は、その中身を短いビデオに収めるために切り詰める必要があることです。しかし、Youtubeのようなビデオ・オン・デマンドのプラットフォームも、時代とともに短いコンテンツが好まれるように変わってきています。従来のレッツプレイのようなものはほとんど存在せず、ほとんどがハイライトだけに切り取られています。Twitchは例外ですが、これは長編コンテンツがあるからではなく、ストリーマーやチャットに参加する人々とのパラソーシャルな交流があるからだと思います。
特に最近はストーリーライティングが問題になっています。
アニメの少年漫画というジャンルは、私にインスピレーションを与えてくれたものであり、本当に楽しいものです。しかし、最近のアニメのペースは信じられないほど速く、これらの物語のいくつかを真剣に受け止めることができなくなった。今日は大悪党、明日はもっと大悪党、一日経てばもう大悪党が登場する。しかし、キャラクター同士の交流、本当の意味での成長、キャラクターが人間らしく感じられるような穏やかな瞬間は、いくつかの物語で完全に失われているとは言わないまでも、今ではとても稀なことです。なぜなら、それは「効率が悪い」「本当に必要ない」「素晴らしい瞬間を作れない」ものだからです。
物語における素晴らしい瞬間は、そこに至るまでに積み重ねられる必要があることを忘れている人がいます。今日のストーリーライティングは、まるでファーストフード店で食事をするような感覚です。そして、今日の視聴文化は、この例えを完璧にサポートしています。ハイプを手っ取り早く満たし、どのエピソードもそのエピソードの中で気に入った20の瞬間を満たしてくれるが、その直後に空腹を満たすために次の番組を始めるのである。なぜなら、最も重要なものだけが切り取られているにもかかわらず、実質的な中身が欠落しているからです。
私は、それがあなたのスタイルであっても構わないし、あなたの食べ方や食べるものを批判する権利はありませんが、客観的に見て、それは健康的ではないと言えるでしょう。ファーストフード店の客も、高いプレッシャーの中で調理し、失敗を重ね、ほとんど給料をもらっていない労働者も、健康的な消費はしていない。
しかし、もうひとつ、この速いペースが危険なだけでなく、疫病のように広がっている場所があります。
ゲームだ。
少ないプレイ時間でより多くのお金を稼ぐのが、今日のやり方だ。しかも、ジャンルによって違う。ホラーゲームなら10時間でも全然OK、だって1秒1秒が雰囲気で満たされている必要があるから。
オプショナルなものは、ほとんどオプショナルなもので、あまりゲーム後のことやオプショナルクエストを盛り込むのは「効率的」ではない。
最近のゲームはギミックに頼ったものが多く、たとえそのギミックがクールで革新的であったとしても、その可能性を十分に発揮できず、マリオパーティーのミニゲーム程度にしかならないことが多い。
また、RPGの場合、ゲーム内のシステムを悪用したり、グリッチを使わないとクリエイティブなことができないように、無駄な削ぎ落としをしたり、ストーリーを最も重要な部分だけに切り詰めたりして、できるだけ簡素化することが多いようです。
ゲーム開発は「メタ開発」の時代に突入しています。時間がない人、モバイルゲーマー、新しいゲーマー、古いゲーマー、名前を挙げなかった人など、誰でもクリアできるように、わかりやすくする必要があるのです。
これを「アクセシビリティ」と呼ぶのが一般的です。しかし、これはアクセシビリティではなく、メタに則って不要な部分を取り除き、誰もが遊べるゲームを作っているに過ぎないのです。
私がMODを使ったゲームを好むのには理由があります、もしそのサポートがあるのなら。完璧なバランスのゲームを真っ二つにすることもできるし、素晴らしい創造性を発揮することもできる。
でも、この業界は悪くないんです。
毎月やりたいゲームが5本、見たいアニメが7本、そしてYoutubeで500人くらいフォローしている。(そしてYoutubeで500人くらいフォローしている。） コンテンツが簡潔でなければ、一般消費者の注目を集めることすらできないのは当然です。「本当に良いゲームをこれから200時間遊びたいのか」。「10時間しかかからない他の20本のゲームを見逃す可能性があるのか？"このゲームをプレイする時間はあるのだろうか？"
どのガチャゲームもサムい感じがするのは理由があります。ログイン報酬、日次・週次・月次のタスク、エネルギーシステムなどが絶妙に配置されているため、長時間プレイはできないが、毎日少しずつプレイすることはできる。また、貨幣システムの科学性については、もう勘弁してほしい。
エンターテインメント産業は、今まさに最後の砦になりつつあるように感じます。しかし、私たち人間は、この変化に「進化」し、「適応」していくことで、エンターテインメントを、クリエイティブなアイデアで満たされたものではなく、できるだけ効率的になるようにメタでコントロールされたものに変えていくでしょう。
アーティストとして、私もこの変化を感じています。
何千人ものアーティストの間で、月に1、2回しかアップロードしなければ、人々に忘れられてしまうのではないかという恐怖があります。何千人もの素晴らしいアーティストと競争しているだけでなく、他のユーザーに絵を推薦するアルゴリズムやシステムとも競争しているのです。だから、私たちアーティストもメタにこだわって、人に見てもらうチャンスを上げる必要があるでしょう。僕にとっては、今年ほどコンスタントに絵を描いたことはないので、良い決断だったと思います。振り返ってみると、まだまだ改善の余地がありました。このことが私の将来にどう影響するかは分かりませんが、多くのアーティストが、統計や分析といった時代の流れに逆行していることは知っています。なぜなら、アーティストがこのクリエイティブな分野で使うのは、ロジックではないからです。

このブログのタイトルに戻りますが、速いペースは私たちの日常生活だけでなく、楽しみとして行っているメディア消費の方法にも影響を及ぼしています。もし、毎日1000もの見たり、遊んだり、読んだり、楽しんだりするものがあれば、それらはその日の自由時間に合わせなければなりません。
一方、産業界は消費者を養わなければならない。そのためには、「効率的」でなければなりません。統計によると、人間のアテンション・スパンが短くなっているため、5分程度のビデオを10本作れば、すべて同じかそれ以上のバイラル効果が得られるのに、なぜ1時間だけでなく、20時間もかかるビデオを作るのでしょうか？
この文章は、すべてが「効率的」「短い」「簡潔」でなければならないという概念に完全に反しています。しかし、何も削っていないとはいえ、どの段落ももっと長く、正確にできたような気がします。そして、もしいくつかのことが明確でなかったり、本当に一般的に聞こえるとしたら、それはこのブログが今の3倍の長さであるべきだったという事実に起因しているのです。何事にも例外はあり、例外のための例外もある。資金や経験が不足していても、「インディーズ」ものがよりクリエイティブである傾向があるのには理由がある。
そして、もし何か質問があれば、遠慮なく聞いてください。そして、私の考えをもう少しうまく説明できるような、もうひとつの大きなパラグラフで「報われる」準備をしておいてください。
