Here is a final design in color before the decision to make the shorts in black and white. His design was made with two components in mind. First he had to look like a bloated human, and from his skin maggots would pop out and at the same time the maggots poping ot of his body had to have his face to.
Here is the final colored desgn for the maggots. The first shot we would see this maggot face would be a shot of it emerging from flesh facing the camera.
Since this shorts were made in a quite tight schedule I decided to use 3d in some shots.
Mila Monaghan ( check out her work! She does mainly 2d https://www.instagram.com/milamonaghan/ ) did the great 3d models that I used in Uncanny Alley. They helped me a lot with some head movements to keep the model consistent,
And also helped on how to meke the shadow pass.
Here is a first rough of the flesh camera movement, this was made in straight ahead on tvpaint. The head movement rough was already made with the 3d model help, to better match the flesh movements.
Here you can see how I used the 3d model in the cleaning phase.
Then with the shades of gray applied to the "Maggot man"
Then I added a lot of layers of shadow highlights, line duplication to help in the compositing stage. I did some back and forth between tvpaint and after effects to have all the layers needed for this shot.
Here is the final result, at the end I added the little white highlights. Before making them the shot didn't felt right, it didn't look like flesh so I used reference and noticed there was some sharper highlights missing to give this wet flesh look.

Thank you!! Using 3d models in 2d animation for head models but also camera movements or solid object movement has become pretty usual in the industry! Its quite usefu! Sketchfab is a good website for reference

These breakdowns are fascinating! I love reading the thought process that led to the shots and the way you integrated 3D and rotoscoping is really interesting. The shorts were incredible! Some of the most exciting horror I have seen in years.
