A life worth living

It's getting close to the point of no return for my mother. I am with her every day trying to do my best to help out as best I can. I wanted to share with you some things about me so maybe you get to know me better.
I came from nothing. After my drunk and violent dad left the picture when my mother finally divorced him, it was just the three of us left: my mom, my older brother, and me. There were times when we didn't have much to eat, sometimes nothing at all. Living in 90s in post-communist Romania doesn't leave a lot of room for options as a single mother with two children. But boy, oh boy, she did not give up. She managed to emigrate to Germany and found work, so my brother and I could get through school back home while she was away. It was hell for everyone, but at least we weren't starving anymore and had a roof over our heads.
I moved to Germany eventually and have been living here since. This country offered me so much more than I could have imagined. It's true that I could have done more to better my situation, but at the time, I was a kid with a lot of unresolved issues. Now, at 37, and having gone through so much in life, I see how the past has forged me into a much better person. And I have to thank my mother for all of this. Without her support and understanding, I would not be here writing this post. I would not have had a great career, and I would not have managed to graduate from a university or even highschool. "Blessed" doesn't even begin to describe what me having a mother like this actually is. She is the most caring person in the world and has been the biggest supporter I have ever had, the kindest and most understanding friend and the most loving mother. Even if life brings so many awful things our way, I am grateful for having lived a big part of my life with my mother by my side.
Until that final day comes, I will be next to her, holding her hand as she was next to me when I needed her most.

That's very touching to read, she sounds like a wonderful person. It's great you've been able to build so many fond memories with her over the years, which you'll be able to hold dear for many more to come. Wishing well for you both in this final chapter.
