I always enjoyed it. It just has some tonal swings like The Cable Guy where it gets all serious. Early gags like Stiller unlocking 15 different locks on Zero’s front door worked great.

It's been ages since I watched The Cable Guy, as my introduction to it was from that Simpsons episode of Homer tearing up the script and crying "RUINED JIM CARREY'S CAREER!!!". Judging by the poster, I thought it was a horror film, as Chip's stare makes him out to be a slasher villain. After watching it, I found it an interesting piece to look back on, as its dark comedy and eccentric nature wouldn't have been what people expected from Carrey during this era. Stiller came out okay, with it being one of his first collaborations with Jack Black (Tropic Thunder and that Heat vision & Jack pilot being another), and he's proving to be quite adaptable over the years; falling back on his directing gigs to stay in the Hollywood system. My memory is fuzzy, but I recall laughing at Chip's phone call with Steven, as that spider is crawling on his face without any reaction from Chip. However, moments like the rude password game leave me confused, as I don't exactly see the awkwardness for what it is. I think the tone is The Cable Guy's biggest enemy, as it wants to be a messed-up dark comedy while being a goofy Jim Carrey vehicle. A Different Man was similar to this, but it pulled it off to stronger reception, with The Cable Guy having mixed results. Also, Broderick being a bad actor as usual.

I heard the guys mention The Ben Stiller Show so I was going to bring up Heat Vision And Jack. No way it would have worked as a series but the pilot is like lightning in a bottle !

The political climate of the past decade may have destroyed his brain, but I still consider him one of the funniest guys alive for the most part even if he is past his prime. The Comedy should have had a lot more attention than it did considering its themes during the time it was released.

Loved Cable Guy ever since I saw it in theatres back in 1996, but watching it now I can’t help but think it’d be even better if Ben Stiller had also starred in it in the Matthew Broderick role, I don’t think Broderick is very good in this but I still love the movie.

As for suggestions for future episodes, I'm not going to stop asking you to revisit the 90s Halle Berry comedy BAPs. But, with my Oscar fever beginning to break, a double episode on The Comedy and Entertainment, starring Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington respectively, would personally make me really happy.

Re-watching The Cable Guy, I was reminded of a movie I saw back in my days as a Blockbuster Video manager, when I would watch almost quite literally anything and everything, called Enduring Love. It stars Daniel Craig and Rhys Ifans and plays out like a much darker, much more homoerotic re-imagining of it. Have either of you even heard of this? Also, since I think I was asked, I ALMOST did revisit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as my choice for family movie night last week, but my daughter vetoed it in favor of my alternate pick, the Beatles jukebox musical Across the Universe. Both are movies I really enjoyed when they were new that I've been afraid to revisit now that I'm older, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this one held up pretty well. A great way, at the very least, to share the music of The Beatles with a musical theater kid.
