Excellent pod again guys, glad I finally joined the Patreon. When it comes to those “sad boy” movies like ESOTSM and Garden State I sorta agree with both of you. They’re victims of time. They get a “pass” because they were the first of these whimsical-adult indie movies that plagued the 2000s. I could fire off a few I liked if I thought about it but they did start to get annoying and derivative after a while. Mildly related-parts of Youth in Revolt were shot in my town which was kinda cool seeing.

Good one to check out alongside CABLE GUY is FLIRTING WITH DISASTER. Stiller is quite good in it and it came out maybe a couple months before CABLE GUY. Great actors all over that movie.

I'll listen to his reviews from time to time, and I find his books entertaining and informative. Not to mention, he's one of the few film critics who has respect for horror, as he's a fan of The Exorcist and The Last House on the Left. But I won't argue that he does have an ego (With him even acknowledging it) and that some of his reviews are swing-and-miss.

This has very little to do with anything, but just the Jack Black santa movie reminded me that the other day I went to this collection of food court areas in between a bunch of hotels downtown. I like this one cuban stand for breakfast, and there were thousands of high-schoolers for both a cheerleading thing and an academic thing that weekend. Just seeing hundreds of kids in this big restaurant area in blazers and khakis in mile-long lines for both chic-fil-a and starbucks and literally NOTHING else explained a lot of things for me.

This story is hilarious and I've never known it. We'd all like to think we'd take this sort of thing like AO Scott apparently did, which I think is awesome, but most of would probably be in the other boat. I personally would probably go full on Gallo/Ebert.

One of the more amusing things about Charlie Kaufman is his feud with Mark Kermode. This all dates back to Mark's review of "Synecdoche, New York", which he didn't care for and found confusing. He stated that he liked Eternal Sunshine less after watching Synecdoche, which Charlie found unfair (It's like saying how you now dislike The Deer Hunter after watching Heaven's Gate). He said similar things about Anomalisa, which was a sore spot for Kaufman on a BBC Radio 5 interview, as he asked why Mark was such an arsehole about Synecdoche before the recording. This didn't sit well with Mark, who decided to press his buttons by bringing up Inside Out winning over Anomalisa at the Oscars and pushing him for answers about what Anomalisa meant. Years later in his book Antkind, Charlie puts a dig at Mark in one of B.'s (The main character who's an insecure film critic) monologues; referring to his essay work as a "sewer-centric film study" and making up an essay titled called "I, Mark Kermode, am an asshole". This resulted in Mark placing I'm Thinking of Ending Things on his Worst of 2020 list, just to spite Charlie. What's funny is that A.O. Scott is poked fun of in the book, with him taking the jabs in good taste. You rarely see a critic and filmmaker feud go on for this long.

I was a manager for Blockbuster Video when it was released on DVD and I was such a huge fan of it I was recommending it to all of my customers. I even made a sign near the register and it's (limited) space on the new release wall so people would consider it. I haven't watched it since then so I wonder if my opinion on it will have changed now that I have so much more life experience, but man it really spoke to me when I young, dumb, and unreal/idealistic about romance.

This movie really annoyed me because it made me think about how much the me of 2002 would've blindly enjoyed it. The way it portrays the 60s and it's ideals, patriotism, and show business in general made me think again about how accurately or inaccurately the era we're currently living in will be portrayed in movies as many years removed as this was from it's own time. The scene with the FCC guy yelling at the contestants, the idea that Drew Barrymores character is some kind of free spirit dream girl when she's actually just as degenerate as the main character, it all got me thinking about how long this sort of thing has been going on. Seeing Clooneys friends Brad Pitt and Matt Damon juxtaposed against that lame third contestant really annoyed me and it just brought to mind that this is a Hollywood insider we're supposed to believe is showing us how the sausage is made, but is really just presenting a cheeky criticism of what we're allowed to see. I realize it's supposed to be an exaggeration, almost a parody, but it all just felt so condescending. The more it becomes apparent how dishonest our media really is the more I question what it's taught my generation about contemporary history. They say history is written by the winners and the last 100 years has been by those who uphold the institution of Hollywood. A bit unfair to this particular film, but this is how I'm forced to look at entertainment media now. Thanks for reading.
