Early Access: Episode 45 - The Cable Guy (1996)

So, without further ado, here's our full episode on The Cable Guy. I normalized the audio and did some minor enhancing and I think it sounds way better than the sample did. Still, it's not perfect but definitely listenable.
On this ep, we discuss Ben Stiller's career at length, including his directorial work (Reality Bites, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and some of his early acting roles (Hot Pursuit, Heavyweights, Flirting with Disaster, Zero Effect).
We have a fun Patreon ep on Jim Carrey coming as well that will also have to be enhanced but we'll have it to you soon! Thanks again for all the patience, support, and feedback. Walter Hills first screenplay, "Hickey and Boggs" is a really good, underrated 70s neo-noir crime thriller. It'd be great if you guys checked that one out.

I would’ve liked to see what Stiller’s career would be had he kept doing roles like Permanent Midnight. Listening to this reminded me he wanted to do a film of What Makes Sammy Run? with Stahl as co-writer. Would recommend the book it’s based on. It’s surprisingly bitter considering it came out in the 40s and was from a pretty major screenwriter of that era.

Has one of the great lineups of character actors ever assembled. Rip Torn is a lot of fun as Nolte’s cop buddy. Top notch action score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Walter Hill’s run from the 70s through the 90s is incredible. The two I’d love to see some discussion on are JOHNNY HANDSOME with Mickey Rourke and EXTREME PREJUDICE with Nick Nolte and a terrific Powers Boothe. Someone once called PREJUDICE “THE WILD BUNCH with sunglasses and trucks” and that is an apt description.

IMO Tropic Thunder’s longest lasting impact is in One Direction’s music video for Best Song Ever. They do an extended bit where the band is arguing with studio executives and Louis is straight-up just Tom Cruise’s character. And Zayn’s in drag!

I sent you guys this Walter Hill movie a long time ago "The Driver" he did just before Warriors. It's a really bizarre film with some bizzare acting choices by all three leads, but kinda wins you over in the end. I'd LOVE to hear someone do a deep dive on it, especially considering how much is already out there on movies like The Warriors or 48 Hours.

For Walter Hill: Streets of Fire's opening is the best movies have ever been Last Man Standing is incredibly underrated The Warriors obv 48 Hrs obviously too but I do think Another 48 Hrs is overhated. Not great but fun enough for what it's worth

Great episode guys, the audio is 70% of the way there and that's all that matters. And Joe, that's an amazing story about Paul Feig. The man's way more than that GHOSTBUSTERS remake, and a damn funny actor at that, so I can only imagine he's a real gentleman. And you guys would have plenty to say about The Ben Stiller Show, I laughed my ass off rewatching the DVD constantly and it led to my further love affair with Mr. Show.
