I have just realized I have only watched like 3 Kurt movies (Probably more but I'm not counting Sky High because I was like 6) probably Rudy from Used Cars, my enjoyment of Breakdown is not fully tied to him and in Overboard he reminded me too much of shitty Step dads I had, while Rudy, much like everyone in that movie just the right kind of piece of shit

I like Kurt in everything, he's a reliable actor in action, drama or comedy. He's never been an A-lister but that way we didn't have to worry about him falling from that level. I'd say my favorite role is Snake Plissken. Funniest deadpan action hero in a straight ahead action movie.

To me it’s so hard to choose one because Kurt is in the John candy, John Goodman and Jack Nicholson level of actors where he’s good in everything and rarely phones it in.

There’s a cute performance of him doing Sugar Sugar in Disneyland on youtube - it’s a slightly different arrangement(?) from the record and worth watching if you like that sort of thing!

John Ruth from Hateful Eight. Russell’s funny because he’s way better at types than actual characters, which his best directors know how to use. I feel like Tarantino knows to give him time to get comfortable with a type without demanding that a lot of emotion or backstory be worked out. Carpenter knew that too, but the result is that Russell’s performance seems so of the worlds of “Escape From New York” and “The Thing” that he almost blends in. It’s an unselfish choice for the actor but it makes for a lot of great movies which Russell improves without really standing out as an actor. Captain Ron is his biggest standout as a character but that and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 use him the wrong way in my opinion.

Captain Ron, definitely. I think he also makes a cool Santa in the 2 Christmas Chronicles movies even though those movies are not great.

Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China is a given, but I think his performance as Stuntman Mike in Death Proof is underrated

It’s a very basic sports movie role but he’s excellent in MIRACLE. Much more stern character than he usually plays but he’s just as good doing that as his more jovial characters.

Used Cars and Hateful 8, but Gerrit Graham and Walton Goggins are the standouts in those films, so I guess Death Proof

It's not my favourite performance from him, but his role in Sky High stands out to me. I know it's strange to say, but he gets across the ego and tenderness of Steve Stronghold with it never coming off as too unlikable or overly sentimental. He manages to elevate the material since it's practically a Disney Channel film that was released theatrically (With other names that would go on to bigger things).

The Film Smith

I’ll avoid the big roles and say Dark Blue. Not much love gets shown towards that one and it’s a shame because he gets to be real piece of shit in that film. That car chase towards the end too is fantastic.

Easily Death Proof. He plays chill, somewhat charming, and amiable, switches to psychotic monster, then cool and manipulative, and by the end becomes out-of-control, panicked, and fearful. There's so much range in that performance that, while not my favorite Kurt movie, is probably my favorite performance.

Well, in keeping with my tirade against video games, I'll mention how much I love his performance in Escape From New York and how it inspired Solid Snake, the lead character in the Metal Gear Solid games. Those games were incredibly novel in a time before video games were so embarrassed to be what they are and so desperate to be considered art that they sacrificed what makes them unique to imitate Cinema.

My favorite Kurt Russell performance is his self-titled bubblegum record from the 1970 - he did covers of “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies and “Dizzy” by Tommy Roe! It’s a footnote in his career but I like its placement between child actor and action star. (Otherwise my pick is probs Big Trouble in Little China)
