Patreon Exclusive: Wag the Dog (1997)
🕑 Added 2024-12-05 16:19:29 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Here's our Patreon follow-up to Bulworth where we discuss yet another political satire, this one released just a year prior - Barry Levinson's Wag the Dog. We definitely recommend giving this movie a watch prior to listening, especially if you've never seen it!
Edit: Sorry for having to post and re-upload this several times. Patreon decided they would change how to upload audio attachments and it took me a couple tries to figure it out.

You guys should check out The Second Civil War (1997) and The Pentagon Wars (1998) they have a similar tone to this movie.

You know I just watched Hot Tub Time Machine, honestly I think a all female "remake" (Is it really a remake if only the plot is the same?) Wouldn't be that bad, but what I'm thinking is a group of people go back to the past and then through bullshit they fix their futures that will be the only thing the same with the original you can change everything else, fuck it doesn't even need to be at the same resort, it was the Energy Drink that caused ut

In terms of war heroes who ended up being awful, in Australia we recently had Ben Roberts-Smith

If you wanna see another great Dustin Hoffman role check out "Straight Time". It's another major departure from what you were used to seeing from him.

Ah yeah that's a great one! I think it's underrated enough because it kinda skirts between horror and sci-fi and action more than other cult movies which stick to one genre.

Listening to this again while grocery shopping, I notice you guys mentioned "What Just Happened?". It's good, not great, but I do think it's worth seeing for movie nerds like you two. In fact, it would make a great double feature with Jake Kasdand "The TV Set" which is about the development of.a TV pilot and how far off the original vision things get. Might be worth considering around Oscar time.

For a random pick for a future episode I’d go with THE HIDDEN. Truly great sci-fi action film with a gonzo sense of humor.

When will we finally get a trailer for the mob movie Levinson just did with DeNiro? That one has got to be a disaster. Supposed to come out in March but I’m not holding my breath.

Hoping 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND gets some talk for the Kurt episode.

Man the late 90s had a lot of Political Satire

I think the Barry Levinson movie "Diner" is low-key one of the very best movies of the 80s. It also starts at a Christmas party with all the old college friends reuniting in late-50s Baltimore for a wedding, and continues over the holidays if you wanted a patreon movie with some holiday goings on. So many killer scenes, and really launched the careers of all six of its stars.
Ryan Lancello
Yeah that might work.
Steven Trotter
I'm surprised he didn't get a mention when Ryan proclaimed Tim Heidecker to be on his shit list
Lux Anatis
Welp, it finally happened. Sam Hyde got mentioned here.
Almost Cult Classics
Mikey & Nicky would just end up being us rambling over one another much like the characters in the movie

When they claimed Sam Hyde was a heroic Ukranian pilot, I think Ghost of Kiev. I thought about Wag the Dog.

Haha I do that sometimes but then it’s a treat to listen a second time down the line. Anyway Canadian Bacon - ripe for a re-watch for me personally
Steven Trotter
Shit musta zoned that out
Andrew N Chilton
It’s mentioned about a quarter of the way in.
Steven Trotter
Kinda surprised Joe didn't mention Canadian Bacon, it has the similar plot of drumming up an enemy nation for political purposes, and it has John fucking candy

L.A. confidential could be a good episode, also enemy of the state then you could talk about tony scott. For a kurt russell movie there's tequila sunrise
Gavin Fitzgerald
3 movies that i think would be great for a commentary: dial of destiny, dick tracy, and problem child 3

I don’t want to get political should be a t shirt

For the Christmas with Kirk theme you could do backdraft or tango and cash.

I would recommend 29th street unless that’s too christmassy.
Lux Anatis
As for movies for you two to commentary, Mikey and Nicky came to mind immediately. But, I would personally love it if you guys did Bowling For Columbine. I really think that movie needs a reappraisal.
JokersJuicyAss
If Breakdown is the next episode then Black Dog should be the aftershow

I don't see many people talk about The Family Man starring Nicolas Cage. It's almost great. There are parts that aren't fleshed out and when the movie ends you wish it could have been better. You can also do a subversion and talk about it's a wonderful life and the movies that took inspiration from/ripped off. It used to be a ubiquitous Christmas movie, but I think people skip it because of its rereputation and may think it's corny or boring
Lux Anatis
I really don't want our little chat box here to become a political nightmare, so I'll just say you guys didn't disappoint with your analysis of this film and it's themes. This is why you're the only people on the internet i give money to. Never let success change you.

Joe to say Elon is goofy would imply he's funny, I have watched dogs get hit by cars funnier than him

It will come out when Ryan escapes Alec's wrath

Look if NASA got Kubrick to film the moon landing, Kubrick would make them film it on the moon

Gentlemen when is the Alec Baldwin expose coming out? You saving it for our Christmas gift?
JokersJuicyAss
Quick Change might be good for a commentary it's your first good episode after all
JokersJuicyAss
Death Wish 3 is considered hot trash, but this movie is amazing
JokersJuicyAss
Boy you guys had one hell of a time trying to upload this
