This time we're talking about Tango & Cash (1989), 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001), and Bone Tomahawk (2015). Also, apologies for the low volume on the last episode. I had the wrong setting checked on the export which bumped the sound down considerably. Should be resolved with this episode but let me know if there are any issues. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I'm also debuting the new and improved podcast logo and branding with this episode. I wanted something that kept the style of the old logo but made the title of the show pop more visually. I also put our names on the same level so Ryan would stop hounding me about equal billing. Such a prima donna. Anyway, let us know what you think!

I've read several of Zahler's book and you're right, it can be bitch to find good copies. Mean Business on North Ganson Street is an interesting novel, despite one particular sequence of animal cruelty that really bothered me. Overall, his prose can both be fantastic, if a little too fanciful. His prose fits the western genre specifically, since the dialog can then be less natural, but in a modern setting, as you can see in Brawl and Dragged, can be off-putting for some, though I never minded it personally. It's similar to the dialog in The Counselor- which Joey likes and I think is Ridley Scott's best film in years- where characters can suddenly turn extremely poetic and erudite. But again, I like it.

Re: Zahler not getting much work...I don't think the nature of the projects announced vs projects made/Covid can be discounted. But he also got tagged as a "fascist filmmaker" post-Dragged Across Concrete and that's kind of stuck. The association with Cinestate wouldn't have helped. I don't know enough about his personal politics to say whether that's accurate. He strikes me as an edgelord -- but conversely depiction of behaviour is not the same as approval, not all characters can be assumed to be the director's mouthpiece etc. But either way -- can't imagine that's helped his job prospects with the majors.

Brigands of Rattleborge was that famous unproduced script of his. I think it was the first thing I read from him. I’d say it’s pretty equal to Tomahawk in the brutality department as well (they even have a scene almost on par with the deputy’s death). They were going to film it with McConaughey and the director of Oldboy last I heard.
