I loved Punisher War Zone the only reason I feel it underperformed was it came out 5 months after The Dark Knight so comic book films couldn’t be in any way exaggerated/over the top after dark knight and look where we are now making a knock off taxi driver/king of comedy calling It JOKER, making knock off David Fincher films calling them THE BATMAN, knock off Sopranos calling it The Penguin c’mon I’ll take Batman 89, Punisher War Zone, Hellboy 2004 while not perfect films or adaptations AT LEAST THOSE THREE EMBRACED BEING BASED ON COMIC BOOKS NOT ASHAMED OF BEING BASED ON COMIC BOOKS like (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man Of Steel, JOKER, The Batman, and Penguin HBO Max show) who feel so ashamed that they are based off comic characters

Listening to this again I take note of Ryan posing his question about the definition of an "art film" and realize I just had a similar conversation with my daughter about it. She put on 2009s Where the Wild Things Are (that might be one?) and she asked why it was such a giant flop when I mentioned it. I told her it was probably because it was an art film when most people might have expected a kids movie. In this case it's distinction as an art film is because it was a movie about childhood rather than a movie for children, which it is anyway. As Roger Ebert used to say, a movie is not about what it is about but how it is about it and an "art film" is just more aware of that.

I like the older Herzog movies best, but I get the sense that his years of documentaries and this weird fascination with just zainy people who exist on the margins of society really informs his newer style. There was also a theme of like lizards or alligators and like karma with nature, where he uses a low-quality consumer camera to record "outtakes" with animals lurking around the actors? And just puts 'em in the finished movie? I feel like the ending too is kinda a karma thing, like he does bad stuff but has his own underlying morals where he gets rewarded by nature for saving the guy and putting away Xzibit? I'd say it's very similar to the Coen brothers Serious Man, and in-fact I'd say they're virtually the same movie in every way.

Maybe an idea for a future October project. I recently watched Tales From the Crypt season 1 and the amount of connections is insane. Zemeckis, Walter Hill, Richard Donner, Tom Holland. Bill Sadler, Lea Thompson, M. Emmet Walsh, Amanda Plummer. The list goes on. I had fun with it. I'm sure the series itself is considered a legitimate cult classic so for the patreon or a sidetracks, it might be a fun thing for you guys to check out. I'll be watching more of the series for sure.

I feel the same about Boardwalk Empire, really enjoyed most of the show besides the mega rushed last season. But I was always more interested in every single character's side stories and just had to begrudgingly trudge through anything centering on Nucky or his singsong Mick wife

I've seen Liebestraum a couple times and remember it being very ho-hum, but having pretty cool visuals. I think there was like a TCM or somebody neo-noir night where they played that and like Spanish Prisoner and definitely House of Games and maybe Memento? I kinda get it mixed up with the movie B Monkey, which has a similar thing going on?
