Chapter 22: An Offer?

Arthur’s Dissonance climbed from 98 to approximately 104 points. Minimal cost. He shaped the technique carefully, creating a precise disruption rather than a destructive blast. This was surgical work, not combat application.
The Void energy pulsed outward from Arthur's position. It touched Mo Lin's translation field at multiple points simultaneously. The qi structure destabilized. The field collapsed. The jade slip in Mo Lin's hand went dark as its active effect terminated.
Mo Lin's eyes widened. The young man looked at the inactive jade slip, then at Arthur, then back at the slip. His expression showed surprise but not anger. More like fascination. He was trying to understand what Arthur had just done.
Arthur released his Void Synchronization and used Resonant Comprehension. The technique was already active from before so didn’t require any extra energy.
"I apologize for disrupting your technique," Arthur said in the local language, speaking it properly for the first time since arriving in this world. "But the translation device was too imprecise. Misunderstandings could arise from the conversion errors. I prefer to use my own method for linguistic comprehension."
Mo Lin stared at Arthur for several long seconds. Then a slow smile spread across his face. Not offense. Interest. Pure intellectual curiosity lighting up his expression.
"You've been able to speak our language this entire time?" Mo Lin asked.
"I could understand it," Arthur clarified. "My technique provides comprehension of spoken language. But this is the first time I have spoken it aloud. The grammar and phonemes are still somewhat foreign to my vocal structures."
"Fascinating." Mo Lin was examining Arthur with renewed attention, clearly trying to sense whatever technique Arthur was using. "Your method bypassed my jade slip's translation field entirely. You're not using qi for linguistic comprehension. What system are you drawing from?"
Arthur paused. This was dangerous territory. Revealing too much about Resonance theory could create problems. But Mo Lin seemed genuinely interested rather than hostile. An intellectual peer recognizing another practitioner's competence.
"My tradition works with external frequencies rather than internal energy cultivation," Arthur said carefully. "We attune to ambient patterns and use them to achieve various effects. Linguistic comprehension is one application among many."
Mo Lin's eyes lit up with recognition. "External energy manipulation! Like totem practitioners or shamanic traditions? Or perhaps the spirit-callers from the southern jungles? Or maybe the elemental binders who work in the volcanic regions?" Mo Lin was clearly running through his mental catalog of magical traditions. "No, wait. Your energy signature doesn't match any of those systems. The structural pattern is completely different."
Interesting. This world seemed to have multiple magic systems.
"My tradition originates from very distant lands," Arthur said. "The magical framework developed independently from the systems you're familiar with."
Mo Lin nodded slowly. Understanding dawned in his expression. He had reached the point where pushing for more specific information would be rude. Magical traditions often kept their core methods private. Pressing a foreign practitioner to reveal technical details about their cultivation system was considered poor etiquette in most cultures.
"I apologize for prying," Mo Lin said formally. "Every practitioner has the right to protect the knowledge of their lineage. I overstepped appropriate boundaries in my curiosity."
"No offense taken," Arthur assured him. "Intellectual curiosity is a virtue among practitioners in my tradition. Questions are encouraged. Though answers may not always be forthcoming for various reasons."
Mo Lin was quiet for a moment. His eyes had gone slightly distant, as if he was thinking through something complex. Then he murmured, almost to himself, "Even though you're not a Nascent Soul cultivator, your power isn't far from that level. And that's while you're clearly injured."
Arthur did not respond verbally but internally he had to agree with the assessment. Gauging power levels across different magical systems was notoriously difficult. An Archmage's capabilities did not map cleanly onto this world's cultivation realm structure. But based on what Arthur had observed, his full capacity was probably somewhere above Nascent Soul level.
Maybe equivalent to whatever realm came after Nascent Soul, if such a realm existed in this world's system. Arthur had not heard any mention of higher levels yet, but that did not mean they did not exist. The guards and merchants he had overheard probably would not discuss realm stages above what they personally encountered regularly.
Then again, Arthur could be completely wrong about the power comparison. Sensing someone's aura or energy signature gave you information about their cultivation refinement and energy density. It told you nothing about their combat capability, technique versatility, or tactical intelligence. Arthur had seen plenty of examples in his own world where a practitioner with lower Cadence density had defeated someone with much higher capacity through superior technique selection and execution.
He would need to actually see Nascent Soul cultivators in combat before making any definitive assessments. Watch how they fought. What techniques they employed. How they managed their qi expenditure. That data would let him calibrate his understanding properly.
But Arthur fervently hoped he never ended up on the receiving end of a Nascent Soul cultivator's full combat capabilities. Observing from a safe distance would be vastly preferable to direct experience as a target.
Mo Lin was still lost in thought. Then he said, "The Sect Master would be very interested in meeting you."
Every alarm bell in Arthur's mind started ringing simultaneously.
The Sect Master. The leader of a cultivation sect. The person who commanded enough authority and power that even this Nascent Soul cultivator referred to them with obvious respect. That meant the Sect Master was almost certainly a higher realm than Nascent Soul. Probably much higher.
Arthur thought through the implications rapidly. Meeting such a person would place him under direct scrutiny from someone who could read his capabilities with far more precision than anyone he had encountered so far. His damaged Cadence would be immediately obvious. The fact that he was using a completely foreign magical system would be apparent. Questions would be asked that Arthur might not want to answer.
More concerning: powerful cultivation sects operated with their own internal politics and power structures. Arthur had read enough about similar organizations in his own world to recognize the pattern. Resources were controlled by those at the top. Advancement required proving your value to the organization. Leaving once you joined was difficult and often carried social or political costs.
If this Sect Master decided Arthur would be useful to their organization, they might apply pressure to recruit him. Subtle pressure at first. Offers of resources, training materials, protection. But if Arthur declined, the pressure could escalate. Someone with Arthur's apparent power level represented significant value. Sects did not let potentially valuable assets walk away easily.
And if the Sect Master felt insulted by Arthur's refusal? Or decided Arthur represented a threat to their interests? Or simply wanted to study his foreign magical techniques through dissection rather than cooperation?
Arthur had read historical accounts of such things happening in his own world when practitioners from different traditions encountered each other during less civilized eras. The strong took what they wanted from the weak. Knowledge, techniques, sometimes even the practitioner's Cadence itself could be harvested if the methods were barbaric enough.
Arthur had no good options for dealing with that scenario. His reduced capacity meant extended combat was off the table. A Nascent Soul cultivator operating at full power could likely outlast Arthur's damaged 600-point threshold, especially if they had backup from other sect members. Fighting was not a viable solution.
Running would just make him look suspicious. Like he was guilty of something and trying to avoid consequences. That would almost certainly prompt pursuit. And Arthur had no idea where he would run to anyway. He was in unfamiliar territory with no allies and no safe locations identified. Running blind through hostile wilderness while being hunted by a powerful cultivation sect was not a survival strategy. It was just a slower form of suicide.
Hiding in Rising Stone Town would be temporary at best. The city was too small. Too exposed. If a major cultivation sect decided to apply pressure, the local City Lord would have no choice but to cooperate. Yuan Feng seemed like a reasonable person, but he also had responsibilities to his citizens. He would not risk his city's safety to protect one foreign practitioner from a powerful sect's attention.
Better to avoid the entire situation. Politely decline the meeting with the Sect Master. Find some excuse that would not cause offense but would make absolutely clear that Arthur had no interest in deeper involvement with the Ten Thousand Rivers Sect. Perhaps claim he had taken vows not to affiliate with established institutions. Or that his spiritual journey required him to remain independent. Something that sounded legitimate while closing the door on further recruitment attempts.
Arthur opened his mouth to formulate that polite refusal.
His Attunement screamed a warning.
Someone had just appeared in his room. Not entered through the door. Not climbed through the window. Just suddenly existed in a space that had been empty a moment before.
Arthur's head snapped toward the corner of the room near his bed. His body tensed. His hand dropped toward his storage pouch automatically even though he had no idea what technique he could deploy that would be useful against whatever this was.
Mo Lin noticed Arthur's reaction immediately. The young man's casual posture vanished, replaced by alert readiness. His own spiritual sense was clearly scanning the room now, searching for whatever had triggered Arthur's response.
"What's wrong?" Mo Lin asked, his voice sharp.
A woman's voice answered from the shadows.
"Your Sect Master isn't the only one interested in him."
The shadows in the corner near Arthur's bed rippled like disturbed water. Then they peeled away, revealing a young woman. Her appearance struck Arthur with the kind of immediate aesthetic impact that demanded attention whether you wanted to give it or not.
She was beautiful. Strikingly so. Her face had that perfect symmetry that appeared in classical artwork more often than real life. Jade-pale skin that seemed to glow with inner luminescence in the room's lamplight. Dark hair that fell in a straight cascade past her shoulders, so black it almost seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. Features that were delicate without being fragile. Eyes that were dark and deep and carried intelligence that immediately marked her as dangerous regardless of her appearance.
She wore robes of deep purple trimmed with silver thread that caught the light when she moved. The clothing was elegant without being ostentatious. Practical enough for travel or combat but expensive enough to indicate significant resources. Her posture was relaxed but perfectly balanced. The stance of someone who knew exactly how capable they were and felt no need to prove it through obvious displays.
But what was far more impressive than her beauty was the aura.
Arthur's Attunement tracked the energy signature radiating from this woman's position. The density was enormous. The refinement was exceptional. The sheer volume of power contained within human form was comparable to Mo Lin's signature. Perhaps slightly stronger. Definitely within the same general range.
Two Nascent Soul cultivators. In his room. Both apparently interested in recruiting or studying or doing something with him that probably would not align with Arthur's preferences.
This was rapidly becoming the worst day of Arthur's recovery period.

You accidentally put "Wei Lin" instead of "Mo Lin" near the end of the chapter. I read Cultivation is Creation too, but I think that's the wrong character. :)
