Arthur was an Archmage operating in a world with completely different power structures. But the observation also meant this person could read energy signatures with far more accuracy than anyone else Arthur had encountered in Rising Stone Town.
That was concerning.
Arthur's mind was already working through the tactical situation. His Dissonance was at 98 points. Well below his reduced threshold of 600. He had operational capacity if this turned into a fight. But fighting a Nascent Soul cultivator while his Cadence was still recovering from threshold breach would be monumentally stupid.
He thought about Grand Resonant Livian Night. The woman had been legendary in the Symphonic Spire for her intimidation techniques. She could walk into a room and have every practitioner present immediately aware of her power. Not through crude displays or flashy techniques. Just the weight of her presence. The density of her Cadence. The absolute certainty that challenging her would end badly for the challenger.
Livian had cultivated that reputation deliberately. She used it as a tool. When negotiations stalled, when younger practitioners needed reminding of their place, when political situations required a show of force without actual violence. Her presence alone could resolve conflicts that might otherwise have required combat.
Arthur could attempt something similar. Open his Cadence fully. Let this young man feel the full weight of an Archmage's Resonance capability. Project confidence and power and the suggestion that attacking would be unwise.
If Arthur had been at full capacity, it might have worked. Probably would have worked. The density of a fully functional Archmage's Cadence was substantial. The structural complexity alone would register as threatening to anyone with magical perception.
But Arthur was not at full capacity. His Cadence was damaged. His threshold was reduced. And more importantly, he was not Livian Night. Intimidation had never been his preferred approach. He was a researcher. A theorist. Someone who preferred understanding to posturing.
Despite all this, he was still annoyed. Finding a stranger sitting in his room uninvited was incredibly rude. Arthur was not sure if casual breaking-and-entering was normal behavior for powerful cultivators in this world, but in his world, it would have been grounds for formal complaint to the Resonance Council. Privacy was supposed to mean something.
But since brute power intimidation was off the table, Arthur needed to think. Actually analyze the situation and determine the best approach.
The first option was to do nothing and see where this led. Let the stranger make his intentions clear, respond appropriately, avoid escalation. Passive approach. Safe in the short term.
Arthur dismissed that immediately. He was not the type to be passive. After all, it was his active personality that had led to him going against the Resonance Council's explicit prohibition. Which had resulted in the Septuple Weave experiment. Which had resulted in the dimensional tear. Which had resulted in him waking up in a completely different world with permanent Cadence damage.
Being passive clearly was not in his nature.
Second option: maintain the language barrier facade but communicate through gestures and context. He had been doing that successfully for days now. Yuan Feng had given him a full tour of the city without shared language. Tao had managed to convey gratitude and respect through pure body language. Human communication worked on multiple levels beyond just words.
But this situation was more complex than basic interactions with the City Lord or a nine-year-old boy. This Nascent Soul cultivator represented something bigger. Some organization powerful enough to command practitioners at this realm. The conversation would involve nuance that gestures could not adequately convey. Misunderstandings would be likely. Potentially dangerous misunderstandings.
Not to mention, Arthur was tired of pretending. The foreigner who does not understand the local language act was getting old. He had gathered as much information as he could through passive observation and eavesdropping. Maintaining the deception was becoming more trouble than it was worth.
The final option was to use Resonant Comprehension and reveal that he did in fact understand them. This would open up so many more possibilities. Direct communication. Actual negotiation. The ability to ask questions instead of guessing at context from overheard conversations. And honestly, Arthur was ready to just talk to people normally again.
Yeah, the third option seemed best.
Arthur opened his mouth to speak, prepared to break the facade entirely.
"Ah yes, you don't speak our language," the young man murmured, more to himself than to Arthur. "But no matter. I was sent for this purpose after all."
Arthur closed his mouth and watched. The young man was reaching into his robes, pulling out something small. A jade slip, perhaps three inches long and an inch wide. The object glowed with internal energy. Not qi exactly. Something else. The energy pattern reminded Arthur of how arrays and formations worked. Pre-prepared magical effects stored in physical objects.
The young man held the jade slip between two fingers and channeled qi into it. Arthur's Attunement tracked the energy flow carefully. The qi moved from the cultivator's dantian up through meridians to his hand, then into the jade slip itself. The object's internal structure activated, lighting up with lines of power that Arthur could perceive as geometric patterns carved into the jade's crystal matrix.
This was interesting. The jade slip was serving as a magical anchor point, similar in principle to Resonance Anchors but implemented through completely different methods. Instead of attuning to Harmonics, the device stored qi patterns that had been inscribed during its creation. When activated, those patterns executed pre-programmed functions.
The function in this case appeared to be linguistic translation. Arthur could feel the qi extending outward from the jade slip, creating a field effect that encompassed both the young man and Arthur himself. The field was analyzing speech patterns. Mapping phonemes. Building correlation tables between different language structures.
Crude but functional. The technique was nowhere near as sophisticated as Resonant Comprehension, which worked by attuning to the underlying conceptual frequencies that existed beneath all language. This jade slip was just doing pattern matching and substitution. It would translate words but might miss context, idiom, or cultural nuance.
Still impressive given the limitations of working purely through internal energy manipulation. Arthur made mental notes about the technique's structure. The way qi could be stored in crystalline matrices. The field projection method. All of it was data he could potentially incorporate into his understanding of this world's magical systems.
The young man finished channeling qi into the jade slip. The glow stabilized. The field settled into steady operation. He looked at Arthur expectantly.
"Can you understand me now?" the young man asked.
The words came through strangely. The syntax was awkward. "Understand me now can you?" might have been a more accurate representation of how the translation processed the sentence structure. The jade slip was converting word order directly without accounting for grammatical differences between languages.
But Arthur could parse the meaning. The technique worked, after a fashion.
"Yes," Arthur said in his native language. "I can understand you."
The young man's face lit up with obvious pleasure. Success. The translation device was functioning bidirectionally. Arthur's words had been converted into the local language for the cultivator's understanding, while the cultivator's words were being converted into Arthur's language for his comprehension.
"Excellent!" the young man said. "This one is called Mo Lin. I am an Elder of the Ten Thousand Rivers Sect. I was sent to Rising Stone Town to verify reports of a powerful foreign cultivator."
Basic introduction. Name, affiliation, rank, purpose. The young man was following what was probably standard protocol for cultivator-to-cultivator interactions. Establish identity first, then proceed to substantive conversation.
Arthur considered his response. He needed to provide enough information to be polite but not so much that he revealed details he wanted kept private. The standard approach for an Archmage meeting foreign practitioners would be to state name, title, specialty area, and general research interests. That template would work here with minor modifications.
"I am Arthur Ferrell," Arthur said carefully. "An independent practitioner pursuing a spiritual journey from distant lands. My path focuses on understanding the fundamental structures of reality through direct observation and experimentation."
The translation jade slip processed his words. What came out the other side was probably mangled somewhat, but Mo Lin seemed to understand the general meaning. The young man nodded thoughtfully.
"A wandering cultivator seeking enlightenment through research. That is an admirable path. Many great masters began their journeys similarly, traveling to distant regions to broaden their understanding of the Dao."
Dao? What is the Dao? But before Arthur could ask for clarification, Mo Lin began asking polite questions about Arthur's journey. Where had he come from? What regions had he visited? What insights had he gained during his travels?
Arthur provided vague answers. He spoke of lands across great distances. Of different magical traditions he had studied. Of techniques that operated on principles foreign to this world's cultivation methods. All technically true while revealing nothing specific about the Symphonic Spire or his home reality.
But the conversation was becoming frustrating. The jade slip's translation was too imprecise. Simple concepts came through acceptably. Anything complex or nuanced got mangled in the conversion process. Arthur said something about studying the frequency of Qi and it came out as "sound patterns of heaven studying." Close enough to be comprehensible but far enough from accurate meaning to create confusion.
Mo Lin was clearly struggling with similar issues. The young man tried to explain something about his sect's water-aspected cultivation methods and it translated as "river power flows through body like thoughts." Grammatically nonsensical but the core idea came through.
This was going to lead to misunderstandings. Possibly serious ones. In Arthur's experience, failed communication between powerful practitioners could escalate into conflict very quickly. Someone would say something that got mistranslated. The other person would take offense at words they never actually said. Emotions would rise. Techniques would be deployed. Buildings would be destroyed.
Arthur decided to test something. Mo Lin had just finished explaining something about his sect's founding history when Arthur deliberately misinterpreted the mangled translation.
"So, your sect was founded by rivers who achieved human form through enlightenment?" Arthur asked with completely false seriousness.
Mo Lin blinked. "No, that's not—wait, did the translation say that? The founder was a human cultivator who gained insights from observing rivers. He wasn't literally a river transformed into human shape."
"Ah," Arthur said, nodding. "The jade slip converted 'gained insights from rivers' into 'was rivers gaining human form.' I see the confusion."
"This device has limitations," Mo Lin admitted with a slight grimace. "It works adequately for basic communication but struggles with complex concepts. I apologize if the translations have been unclear."
Arthur reached for his Cadence. He needed to do something about this translation problem before more serious miscommunication occurred. The jade slip was a decent attempt at magical linguistics but it was not adequate for the conversation they needed to have.
He opened himself to Attunement and perceived the qi field extending from Mo Lin's jade slip. The structure was relatively simple once Arthur examined it closely. The field maintained itself through continuous qi channeling from the cultivator. It operated as an active effect, constantly analyzing speech and converting it through stored pattern tables.
Breaking it would be trivial. Arthur just needed to introduce counter-frequencies that disrupted the field's cohesion. Void Harmonic would work perfectly. A brief pulse of negation-aspected energy directed at the field's structural anchor points.
Arthur raised both hands slowly, palms forward in a universal gesture of non-aggression. "I'm going to adjust something," he said through the mangled translation. "Not an attack. Just fixing the communication problem."
Mo Lin's posture shifted slightly, becoming more alert, but he nodded once. Permission granted, or at least acknowledgment that he was paying attention to whatever Arthur was about to do.
Then Arthur achieved Surface Synchronization with Void.
