I've been working on the Ultra probe and amplifier. I'm relatively new to SMD and making my own PCB's; (via toner transfer). Actually, the probe board is my 2nd and the amp board is my 3rd board. The probe board came out nicely, but the amp board had a few filled drill holes and two traces that were not complete. I added some 30 AWG wire to complete these traces. The parts were ordered. I had a time specifying 1206 parts. I made one mistake and ordered a LM386 as VSSOP instead of SOIC. The other issue is that not all parts are labeled. None of the capacitors and half of the resistors. The diodes and transistors are also a mystery, but I think I got them in correctly. I measured all the parts prior to installing. Soldering these small parts is also something new to me. I'm using a 25 watt iron, but using it, feels like my 300 watt American Beauty. I found that tinning the board and using liquid flux are great enhancers. At first I was using too much solder, but after a while I became better at it. My main problem is that I only have one eye (no parallax) that works and it is difficult to get the small parts in place and solder it. I found that by tinning one pad on the PCB and then sliding the part with a tweezers into the blob works pretty good, along with a jeweler magnifier. A problem I do have is that once in a while the tweezers will slip off the part and that part will fly into an alternate universe, never to be seen again. I'm waiting for some additional parts to complete this project and I'm a little anxious about trying it out. I'm a slow worker, but sometimes that turns out well for me. Let you know more as I get along.

Same here. This 185, but i need All the files to start and complete the project.. I am still waiting to find how to PM the lab 😏

If I want to build the UltraProbe and Demodulator Amp, which video's files am I supposed to request? There seem to be multiple videos that mention the files (Video 175, Video 182, and this one). Also , how the heck do I PM Mr Carlson's Lab (which is one of the instructions for getting the files)? I can't seem to find instructions on how to PM someone...

had another idea for putting artwork on the enclosure. untested. Paint the enclosure with high temperature paint eg engine paint and let it dry. Then laser print your artwork reversed onto paper (use the same sort of paper used when making PCBs), and then transfer the toner from the paper to the enclosure using heat - similar to the process used for making PCBs. Either heat the enclosure to about 140c (285f) with a heatgun and place the print onto the enclosure (printed side down) and apply suitable pressure, or using a hot iron to heat the printed paper to try and transfer it to the enclosure. Then remove the paper with water and brushing and then dry the enclosure. Then paint a clear coat on top. Might work?

I see... Thanks for the reply!!

Speaking not as for Paul, but he has said before no, believe me I have tried in the past. Sorry I hope this helps.

Hello! The PCB's you release if we dont have a printer is there another way of creating a pcb or ordering online a custom one?
Mr Carlson's Lab
I will try them first before I mention them, I should know by this next video, I will mention it then, (if they are OK.)
Robert McNulty
Paul, can you post the Avery number for the clear shipping labels?
Brian Wood
Thanks for all your hard work, I'm looking forward to building mine. I've been collecting my parts as you released part numbers.

The forum is a completely seperate site, so create a profile and away you go. It's suggested that you use the same name you use here on Patreon, so others (from here) know who you are.

Nice details Paul.... About the Forum... Do I have to register a new account, or would my Patreon account work as is?

Hi Paul, thank you for all of the time you spend creating these wonderful projects and videos for us here on YouTube and Patreon! Give your family an extra hug from us and tell them we say thanks for the sacrifice of your time away from family time.

Ha, to late, mine is already being prepped for paint. Great job though. I am loving the probe and it works great. 1st attempt at smd went ok. I'm certain I used to much solder, but better than to little. Another surprise I will show you later, hint, it is opto-coupled.

Hi Bob. The short answer is: I don't sleep much :^)

Paul, do you stiil have a "day job" or are you now full-time YouTube & Patreon? It's hard to see how you can spend so much time on these projects and still have a day job. Thank you for these artwork & drill guide files!

Just a 2-5/8 inch hole saw, as Boo Mentioned.

A good Milwaukee hole saw will do the job .....

Hi Paul ... how did you make the large speaker hole?
Bojan Delac
Hi, great job, precise as always. I was just wondering how did you make the speaker hole. Any special tools?

Thank you so much - hard to hear B vs D - Yep, I missed it in the parts list. Ooops

Thank you, Paul for this guide. My ultraprobe is basically complete already (I just have to plot the labels and do a clear coat). I came up with my own box and layout solution, since the Hammond boxes are kind of pricey for me. I can't wait to share the result with you on the forum. Hopefully you will not be dissapointed. :D
John
Perfect thank you so much for your efforts and expertise

If the option is there, I will add it.

Hi Paul - are you saying a Hammond 1590B? When I look that up at the Hammond site I get: 1590B enclosure - diecast Aluminum (Die-Cast Alloy) Natural Aluminum - IP54 4.43 2.38 1.22 https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/small-case/diecast/1590

When you do release the Cricket files, can we also get them in SVG? For people who have other vinyl cutters.

Paul, the attention to detail and quality of the work you produce is next to none! Thank you for being willing to share the knowledge you have! Being a newer member, I’m still working my way through the older videos – can’t wait to catch up!

That’s great! Thank you!
