The pacing for this feels really weird. I like the calm broken up by action... but this was a lot of growth all at once. Both his secrets coming out, doubling his gates, and his legendary equipment all happebing at once is a lot. It might feel less like such a Huge leap if he just doesnt realize that hia visor has evolved until a later chapter. Shattering gates means they need to be reformed. You'll remember at the start of Book 1, his Skill Registration shattered his internal essence gates, but he still had sixty of them to eventually cultivate towards. This time he has around 100 activated out of a maximum 240. Leaving roughly 140 still dormant within him.

There are a few reasons for this, including the cost of commissioning merch prototypes, and keeping my mortgage paid during the low-royalty months. My real name is Brian James Nordon, but when I started writing Wildcards, I was scared that it would lead back to my employer. Didn't really go into the condition of the dress after the comment that it may have been damaged due to the essence storm. How did doc Ameye not see or comment on his tracker when it was on his belt as he could see Sophia's. This also explains why sal never analyzed his mom or dad with his tracker as it probably would have gave away their hunter rank... Why would argento auctions have ever needed to take strong armed contracts with this shown strength?

Posted earlier that I loved the chapters, but I had a question about changing tiers. Is this just changing what we get access to or is it changing monthly payments or both? I have to try and control my reading expenses or I’d spend several hundred a month easily, so may need to adjust the reading budget somewhere. I also saw on the membership page you signed as James, are we calling you by your least preferred name?

So, after thinking about it a minute, I think my best serious suggestions for Patreon tiers would be the “standard”. Where it is tied to extra content in the form of tied access to chapters. I.e. $3 gets you X chapter, $5 = X, 10 = X. With extra premium tiers beyond that offering story input. Like crafting items or even side characters. However, I don’t know if your writing style would allow for building and maintaining a backlog of chapters. Also, you’d have to be sure to provide caveats that just donating larger sums does not equal allowing bad or offensive suggestions. I mean, no one wants to read about Sal crafting an extraction towel for Ford Prefect. And while a P.O.V. Gun would be a devastating weapon, I think infringement might be a thing!

I have a question about the visor. It says that Sal pulled it off his invisible belt. Does that mean it is the evolutionary belt and holster which would also hold is revolver? Also when he created the revolver to match the visor, they said the to pieces needed to be the same level to be compatable. Was that only for the creation of them or did it somehow send essence to the revolver if it was left at home. If he did have the revolver and holster, why didn't they start burning up his pants?

I was really glad to see the abruptness of Fabi's skill imprinting being addressed in this chapter set. That was one thing that bugged me a bit last time, because this seems like the kind of thing you'd absolutely give a heads-up about. And, honestly, it makes me sort of wonder how this world even functions (my historian brain is rearing its nerdy head here), because everything feels extremely ad hoc and held together with hope and duct tape. The Hunter's Bureau is the closest thing to a government, as it seems to control land and property, but the on-a-dime changes that everyone seems to make (from Chatfield at the Academy to Prestige in the Tower to Robert here at the gala) feels functionally....unstable and one bad bottle of tequila from collapsing. Even the monetary system feels unstable, because there are credits, but also Q-Cred, and the fact that a *school* is running off its own, competing monetary system is wild. Moreover, there are people who can spend millions of a currency that isn't backed by any government. So far, I've been treating it like it's a post-apocalyptic anime where you just squint and don't look too closely at the logic. But I do pretty regularly think about the fact that Sal and his family are wealthy by any metric, but in a society that seems truly on the brink, I'm not sure how that's possible. It seems like all the reclamation zones are urban so....who is growing the food and where are they doing it? Who is growing the corn to make the bourbon for the old fashioneds? Are they just drinking alcohol from the Before Times? *squints* PS: The story absolutely flows better with variable length chapters!

It does feel like it's dragging out a little bit but I don't think that's because of how you wrote it, I think ts because we're getting a chunk with a week in between, once it's published fully I don't think it will feel like it's dragging. There were some parts of book 3 that had that feeling that (the creation of the weaves) that dragged a little but once I went back and reread them once we had all the chapters didn't feel like that at all. Actually dragging on might be the wrong way to put it, the scenes themselves are awesome but the time between sets of chapters makes you want to get to the meat of thing but that's more a symptom of Patreon stories in general than the writing itself

Did Robert (why do we not have his last name by now?) know that Sal’s final version of Fabi’s weave would be too powerful for the Machine? Was he also aware of how powerful she was going to be? (He did have the entire auditorium ready to take her out after all.) Is that why he had Grant dumb it down? I still get the feeling that there’s a significant history between Robert and Sophia (we now know that she was in the Hunters Bureau in the past). Is THAT how Robert knew what would happen? Are children with certain extraordinary abilities being handicapped by sabotaging their weaves? Is Sophia’s ability what a level 15 Skillmaster looks like? Enquiring minds…

That's something I wanted to gauge interest on. I don't want to make decisions on what the rewards should be without asking the readers, and I don't want to over-promise and under deliver either. I want to create a fair system where I maybe add custom characters created by readers into a pool of characters that I draw on when needed in the story. So if you pick someone really super powered, then the chances of appearing will be lower than say, someone with a more modest skillset that is tied to the plot. :)

I’m wondering if Sal opening up his essence gates mentioning the Perfect was a way for the story to make Perfect an innate ability in Sal like myth crafter instead of having him use skill master to activate and de-activate.

So, I love the writing in these chapters. Thank you. Honestly I think longer chapters are great and feel more substantial. I wouldn't mind 2 chapters with the same word count if thats the way it works out. It seems you have a word count goal for the week and that's a great discipline to practice. Good deal Chapter 42 was a real surprise. I knew Sal would be actively changing whatever they had planned for Fabi but Robert's public announcement really surprised me. It feels like Sal is losing all anonymity in a very short amount of time. It really is a coming out party for him in every sense. The moment he takes off his jacket and rolls up his sleeves reminded me alot of the maestro moment in book 3. As much as the walk to the stage seemed like false confidence for the audience, this moment in front of the terminal was the exact opposite. Genuine unwavering confidence. Nice. Chapter 43. "The Hunters with foresight were the first to react". That line. That line works so well to start this roller coaster. Applause is in order. From that moment we are in damage control mode with the tension and anxiety jacked up to 10. Prestige upstaging Eclipse works. We know heros are gonna hero. Having Eclipse start first shows that there are many capable figures willing to step up and do what needs to be done. At the same time it gives us that familiar face we've grown comfortable with. The team work displayed among Hunters is beautiful and shows that they are true heros. So the tracker file update stat dump. I gotta say, as an audiobook listener, that bit is gonna kill the built suspense at that point. In written format you kinda glance over repeated text and move on. I can almost hear David W. working up the tone and building excitement just to have Rebecca W drop some monotone repetitive techno bable. Then go straight back into superheros. I get it. It's valuable info that Sal can definitely use later, but maybe he can look it over later. Like after Fabi is safe. It would be different if it made him aware of some danger or warned against a possible problem. Speaking of warning of a possible problem, Divinity! "Rather than looking anxious or nervous there was a smile on her face." I literally missed this the first time I read it. There's alot going on and once again the Divinity moments are snuck in. This is a "What the Fuck" moment if I ever saw one. So hopfully we will find out next week how many grades the tracker rose in that maelstrom of invention energy. The way it happened could easily have led to it being merged into his head and eye. Instead of being taken off and dropped to the ground. That would have been a convenient upgrade that didn't draw attention and resources away from saving Fabi. Chapter 44. Enter our Second heroine to save her son, Sophia. Honestly I love this. A mother coming to protect her child. Throwing away secrecy and safety to do what she feels needs be done. There is one small thing though. Isn't she about to work together with Doc Ameye to "Upgrade" this machine in order to save Fabi Maccles?!? She says reverting would use less energy but ultimately does work with him to "Upgrade" the machine. Seems like there was someone else who could have filled this role and ingratiated herself with Ameye at the same time. I understand the focus is on Prestige and Sophia but Upgrade became background scenery in this situation. An assistant to fetch materials at best. The opening of Sal's essence gates. How did that help Fabi? It helps Sal and we know why Prestige wants to do it but it didn't actually benefit or assist with saving Fabi. I would love to hear Divinity say she saw it play out very different and that Sophia stepping up was unexpected. In fact, either Sal or Fabi getting upset about Divinity's manipulations wouldn't be that out of place. Anyway this got long again. Thank you for the chapters. No matter what nitpick I make, I was moved to tears and inspired by the writing. I look forward to what happens next.

I suspect part of the problem is that Sal gave her the full weave, not just the diminished one that they were trying to give her. I also suspect that the machine gave her the full set instead of just the first level and the upgrade paths, thereby needing far more power than expected..

Re-reading these chapters a third time I’m wondering if Rob wanted something like this to happen during the process to show the guilds it should be done under only the most exact specific circumstances so guilds don’t go off half cocked to try copy it. For the sake of story continuity, I think there was a small mistake. Sal says he left the cane at the table, but I thought Upgrade took it with her when they split up for dinner. Another question is, with the debacle of Fabi getting her weave needing Prestige, Doc and Sophia to save the day; how will that impact the skill implant program in the future? Unless now that the machine is upgraded it will work well now.

Great chapters, wonder what Sophia is going to turn out to be with relation to Hunter's Bureau? Clearly she has a previous relationship with Prestige but it seems to hint at her potentially knowing Robert as well. How is Sophia having the same ability as Sal going to affect the dynamic? Why hypothetically did Sophia not help with all of what Sal is doing now? There is so much to look forward to for next week: Sal's guild getting formed, how powerful Fabi truly is, the afterparty, Doc fixing Sal's machine, how are the rest of the Guilds going to react to Sophia revealing herself. Can't wait until next Monday. One issue with waiting on Monday for chapters to drop is reading them right away but then knowing you have to wait a full week until the next chapters come out.
