Week 16 - JSON & Ludum Dare!
🕑 Added 2018-04-16 13:15:59 +0000 UTC Last week was a two parter in case you missed it! Both those Platformer episodes will be going live to the public this Friday. Last Friday the Wall jump + slide tutorial went public. Results of the last poll are in and this week I'm going to be looking at a video on saving & loading using JSON encoding (and decoding) based on the methods Juju explained in his GMMeetup talk. He does a good job of explaining the whys and whats in that video, so I'm going to be covering the hows in a bit more detail for the less experienced.
Fortunately JSON is something I've been working with a great deal over the last couple of weeks during my live streams. It's how I get data from twitch and youtube into GameMaker. It's a pretty standard format to get information from many web APIs.
Should be interesting!
Other than that, this weekend is Ludum Dare 41! I traditionally have taken part in every Ludum Dare since my first. This will be my 11th in a row. If you don't know what that is or haven't seen me do it before it's a global 48 hour game jam, which means building a game from scratch, by myself in 48 hours. All the code, all the art, all the everything.
I'll be streaming live over youtube and twitch.tv/shaunjs simultaneously thanks to the new powers I've unearthed via restream.io.
I will likely do some streaming on Friday in the run up to the 2am Saturday start (for the UK).
In the meantime though, videos!
