Week 8 - The After Effects Effect™
🕑 Added 2018-02-19 15:32:36 +0000 UTC TL;DR: PokeyPoke video still in the works. Due this Friday, then I'm away for a week in Norwich. \o/Long Video Work vs Short Video Work
So I think I've made this distinction before of videos that I can make quickly and videos that take a long time.
The former tend to be videos that rely on:
1. Techniques I understand very well and have little research to do on.
2. Requiring very little beyond footage of the Thing Being Done.
Editing these together is relatively straightforward and much of the time is in the grunt work of normalizing the audio and putting together the credits sequence.
Whereas in a video about something like for example Cameras, or Shaders I have a very different job. I'm not teaching a specific "How-To" here, I'm teaching you how something works. Putting visuals together that explain these ideas takes a long time and can involve hours in After Effects just to create seconds of footage.
With the PokeyPoke video (or maybe two part series, depending on how people feel about this first one) I was tempted to put it together quickly and keep to my (still unofficial) schedule by including generic visuals of the game and just talking over it.
...which I've done in a few places because I couldn't think of better visuals, or it was appropriate.
But I decided to bust out the cursed After Effects and make it Better. Just means it takes a bit longer.
I'm about half way through this video (10m-ish of 20m-ish) so hopefully we'll have it out this Friday before I go to Norwich for the week.
There won't be anything from me next week although I'll try and keep on top of emails etc. Speaking of!
Patreon Messages
I tend to deal with Patreon messages either as I get them if I'm at the PC, or specifically on Mondays. I avoid doing any work at weekends for my own sanity so you won't likely see any responses then. But if you're wondering how long it'll take me to get back to post/message X, "Monday" is a good guess, if it reaches Tuesday and I haven't answered your weekend/past week message, ping me again. I might have missed it.

Doing a thing with another developer and several classes of primary school children. We build a game in an hour and take character designs + ideas from the audience.
Have fun in Norwich man. Are you going there to do stuff or just to enjoy the event?
