I'm late catching up, but I have fun relic facts (courtesy of the two medieval history classes I took in college). 1) The reason that relics were big business is that theologians decided that saints' intercessory powers continued after death, and that each part of the saints' body contained the power of the whole. 2) Theologians later decided that relics could not properly be stolen; after all, if the relic had power, it should be able to stop a theft. Thus there arose the doctor of relic translation, which is what they called it when a relic was stolen and, like, lightning didn't strike down the thieves. It was assumed that the saint agreed to be moved, or translated, to a new location. 3) Minor relics were considered to be parts of their communities, with responsibilities in exchange for prayer. As an example, if a town with a relic was struck by drought, the townspeople could shame the relic for not interceding for the two to bring rain. This shaming would typically involve taking the relic off it's plinth or out of its reliquary, putting it on the ground, and having the townspeople turn their backs on it. I love medieval Catholic history. It is very silly
