Chapter 455: Science in the Service of Torture
“What am I doing here?”
“You want to become more flexible. More athletic.”
“I want that?”
At the edge of the clearing, Jasmine took a short run-up, then performed a double backflip followed by a triple twist. She landed on a branch, used its spring to launch herself again, and ended up facing Esmée, dagger pressed against her carotid.
“You’re good at drawing up battle plans and manipulating your opponents. But when things get close and personal, you’re about as dangerous as an arthritic old man. That’s a weakness worth fixing, don’t you think?”
The princess narrowed her eyes. “What’s in it for you?”
“Besides having fun watching you struggle?” Jasmine smirked. “Making sure Priam isn’t wrong about you.”
It went without saying what Jasmine would do if she ever decided Esméralda posed any kind of threat to her Lord.
Thirty minutes later, the princess deeply regretted her decision. Jasmine, on the other hand, was having a great time.
“Spread your legs wider!” she shouted, using the military bark Kazuki sometimes employed.
“I cannot!”
“Your future husband won’t like that attitude. Alright, watch me,” Jasmine said, launching into a flip. She landed in a full split that would have earned a perfect score at any gymnastics competition. “Easy.”
“Show-off. If I try that, I’ll tear my groin,” Esmée muttered, attempting to imitate her rival. Without the jump, and with a frankly pathetic leg angle.
“I could do that at six, and I didn’t have System attributes to help me,” Jasmine pointed out as she stood up. “Have you ever exercised a day in your life?”
“I scrubbed the twenty thousand windows of Father’s summer castle. And attributes don’t work like that. My constitution interferes with my agility,” Esmée retorted. “I have a huge advantage compared to not having the System, but not one as great as a child’s flexible body.”
“Blah blah blah. All I hear are pathetic excuses.”
“What’s pathetic is not noticing an aether needle against your jugular.” Wiping the sweat from her brow, Esmée shot her a mocking look. “It’s been there for fifteen seconds, and your superb instincts didn’t feel a thing.”
Jasmine looked down and growled when she noticed an almost imperceptible distortion at her neck. Her instincts relied on several factors to identify threats, including hostile intent and their magical or mundane nature. The Author must have convinced herself she didn’t want the Shadow dead, and meta perception wasn’t Jasmine’s strongest attribute.
“Look at you barking at me. You’re a lot less assertive when it comes to talking back to Priam or Kazuki.”
“Twenty years of being taught to stay quiet around males don’t vanish in a few weeks.”
“You’re going to make me cry,” Jasmine mocked, touching the aether construct. It was solid under her fingers. Not an illusion, then. This thing could actually kill her. “My Domain can’t perceive it?”
“Your authority sphere’s resolution is poor, and the needle is thinner than a hair.”
“Damn. Alright. You show me how to detect your attack, and I’ll give you a lesson.”
“Isn’t that what you’re already doing?”
Jasmine looked at Esmée, dressed in a heavy gown, painfully trying to do the splits while, legs straight, she couldn’t even touch her toes.
“A real lesson. One where I actually try to teach and help you improve.”
The princess raised an eyebrow. “I’d like to see that.”
“I doubt it,” Jasmine said, summoning a wall of shadows around them. “Start by taking off your dress.”

A few days later, Priam was leaving Kazuki while counting his bruises. Since awakening his titan bloodline and Tiering up, the hoplite’s punches were capable of massaging a dragon. Despite not being weapons of mass destruction like his spear, the Warrior’s hands were still dangerous.

Upon reaching the base of Log, Priam stepped through a portal onto a high branch where Sna’s cabin rested—both her bedroom and her laboratory. The shaman slept while her concoctions infused. He knocked, and the door opened.
“Here,” the Transcendent said before he could even sit down.
Priam took the vial she handed him and drained it without asking questions. Closing his eyes, he focused on the liquid flowing down his throat and into his stomach. There, it met gastric acid in an exothermic reaction.
The Juggernaut belched a cloud of flames.

“One more level,” he smiled. “The third in six days. Not bad for a Legendary.”
The Tier 4 pinched her lips. “One per month is already considered an insane growth rate. Your Talent is unfair,” she muttered, opening a notebook. “Damage inventory.”
“Stomach lining damaged, but not perforated like last time.” A serious injury that had taken time to heal. A resource Priam didn’t have in abundance. “The esophagus is in bad shape, the mouth too, and I can feel my tongue’s about to molt,” he grimaced, feeling his deadened taste buds. “At least the backdraft only superficially damaged the lungs, and the trachea is intact.”
“Given your draconic bloodline, that’s not surprising. It’s used to channel Breaths,” Sna mused, handing him a second vial filled with a whitish liquid. “I’m less sure about this one.”
“That the base I told you about?”
With his scientific background, Priam knew that while acids were powerful corrosives, there existed, at the other end of the pH spectrum, bases such as bleach or lye. Their caustic nature made them just as capable of destroying human tissue as acids. He theorized—hoped, really—that fusing both resistances could unlock an ideal version.
“I’m afraid I didn’t fully understand your story about stealing or giving electrons. I’m an alchemist, not a chemist,” Sna said, stroking her cauldron. The object very clearly did not belong in an Earth modern laboratory. “That said, I tested all my corrosive products using your method. It’s slippery to the touch.”
Tingling or burning would have indicated an acid.
“The components?”
“Water, wood ash, and Tier 3 treant sap. Dropping a corpse into that cocktail makes it disappear in a few minutes. With your constitution, it should be manageable.”
Priam nodded and poured a drop onto his thumbprint, rubbing it with his index finger. An ivory-colored, slippery substance appeared. It looked like…
A black lock of hair fell in front of his eyes. “A milky white, lubricating liquid… If Sna’s charms affect you more than mine, I’ll be disappointed,” his Shadow teased before sniffing it. “Doesn’t smell like sperm. Soap?”
“Good morning to you too, Jasmine. And yes, it’s soap,” Priam said, raising his hand. “The fat in my skin is reacting with a strong base,” He pointed at the vial of caustic liquid. “to create it. A process called saponification.”
Without his eidetic memory, he would never have recalled the word.
The young woman went pale. “Wait! You’re telling me I clean myself with a product made from people’s fat?”
“I don’t know about Proxima, but on Earth, the industry used pork fat or beef fat. Or vegetable oils,” Priam said, pouring a generous amount of the base onto his palms and rubbing them together.
“But you can use human fat?”
Priam remembered his history classes on the Second World War and grimaced. “Some madmen did.” A change in his hands drew his attention. “My fingerprints are gone. The base is strong enough to eat through my skin—and therefore my tissues.”
Sna stepped closer and nodded. “The proof of concept we were waiting for. I’ll prepare more of the substance in my cauldron, and you’ll immerse your hands in it. You should acquire the resistance in a few hours. At the cost of horrific chemical burns.”
Priam couldn’t help but smile.
“He looks proud of himself,” Jasmine noted.
“I already got the resistance,” the Juggernaut revealed. [Homo Elysian Obsession] and [Life is Hard; I’m Harder] were not slackers.

[Base Resistance] - Bases are just as dangerous and corrosive as acids. More insidious, even: on contact, no immediate burning; they destroy your nerve endings. Your fat is turned into soap, and your muscles are eaten away painlessly.
This skill magically reinforces your chemical bonds, making you less reactive to high-pH substances.
Did you know you can both have [Base Resistance] and still hit first base? Please, man, do something. Your love life is sad.

“Science in the service of torture,” Priam smiled before swallowing the rest of the vial. “Bitter,” he grimaced. “Like endive. Or soap.”
An acid would have tasted sour. For example, lemon. Or vinegar.
“How do you know what soap tastes like?” Jasmine asked.
“My mother used to scrub my teeth with it when I forgot to brush them as a kid.”
Even Sna looked at him with pity.

The next day, Kazuki lent Priam his Colosseum VIP token and hid away in his inner world with Jasmine and Esmée. The four rivals attempted a new run, one week after the last. The plan was to do that until the second Reunion. They had a month and a half to make it as far as possible.
The start was easy. Preparing [Ideal Aether Manipulation], Priam destroyed the first ninety waves with sheer aether proficiency.

Wave ninety marked the beginning of the past gladiators’ phantoms. Stryk-7 greeted him before charging him at jet speed. Priam slipped left, then ducked under a strike meant to take his head off.
A rookie would have backed off to put space between him and the insectoid engine of war. The Juggernaut stepped forward.
Pressing his palm against the praying mantis’s exoskeleton, he released an impulse at resonant frequency. The armor remained intact, but everything inside had been reduced to pulp. The insect collapsed.
There were no attribute multipliers or sudden epiphanies to explain the crushing victory. Nothing but training. Until he collapsed.
For most of the past week, [Priam’s System] had analyzed the data stored in the Juggernaut’s eidetic memory from previous fights. Then it had processed it to extract optimal victory scenarios. A parallel thought of Priam had drilled those scenarios with [Shadow Boxing] every hour of the day. And almost every night.

Waves ninety-one and ninety-two were cleared without a single scratch. It took Hailcyon, an immortal jellyfish hive mind for the fight to finally get spicy.
The moment the jellyzoan began invoking its hail cyclone, Priam opened his mouth to unleash a Pyro Breath. Interrupted, the boss was forced to abort its preparations and dodge. A low-frequency impulse disoriented it again. With air being less dense than water, the wave failed to make it explode, but it was enough to stun it long enough for Priam to raise a curtain of sand and cloak himself in armor.
Now protected from physical contacts, the Juggernaut unleashed Pyro. In response, Hailcyon summoned its hail. The jellyzoan initially avoided the flames by riding its Concept, but Promesse—infused with Heroic Aura and Spear Mastery—forced it out of hiding and into the fire.
Meanwhile, the Juggernaut shamefully gave up on facing Proto Life head-on, choosing instead to shelter inside the heart of a sand golem. His kinetic proficiency halting the hail before it could strike his armor.
The fight lasted ten minutes, the two adversaries circling one another until Hailcyon finally died of dehydration. Not a clean win, but it worked. The next boss wouldn’t be so easy to pass.
Aarthash Riusling appeared just as Priam stepped out of his armored sand suit. Their eyes met. The phantom frowned.
“A dragon bloodline? Low purity at that. Hm. Kneel.”
An oppressive spiritual pressure bore down on Priam. Still, the second time was far less effective than the first. The Champion barely felt his knees tremble, instead feeling pity for his opponent. For all his power, the drake was a toy of the System. Frozen in time, he would never grow stronger. Unlike me.
Seeing his opponent remain calm, the phantom smiled, showing sharp teeth. “Interesting. My name is Aarthash Riusling, heir to the Immortal clan of the same name,” he introduced himself as he inspected his claws. “Since you are unknown to me, I assume I am this wave’s guardian. Which number?”
Perhaps because it was their second encounter, Priam noticed details he had ignored before. Like the fake gold of the drake’s horns. Gold leaf.
“Ninety-four. You failed to defeat Keltan’h.”
The drake narrowed his eyes. “Have we fought before?”
“I’ve already beaten you. Unfairly. I’ve come to correct that mistake.”
The boss looked him up and down. “I doubt it. Your resistance to divination is impressive enough to block my [Identification], but your physique speaks plainly enough. Soon, the arena will be red with your blood.”
Priam shrugged. “This time, certainly. The next as well. But the one after that? And the one after that?”
Wisps of black smoke billowed from the drake's nostrils. He was seething.
“There won’t be a next time. You will die. Here and now.”
The Juggernaut smiled. “That’s my hope. Do your worst.”
This time, the drake would find his victory hard to swallow. Since their last encounter, Priam was tougher to chew.

Pretty sure hitting that would force the tier up. When Kazuki hit t2 weapons, it forced him to teir up. He's close to t3 weapons but already in teir 1.

Well its probably been 3 chapters a week on average. So already been writing for 3 years in tier 0. 3 x 9 would be 27 more years at this pace. Obviously it wont be, but yea the author has stated before he realizes how long he has stayed

I have read this story from chapter one up until here over the past 3 days. Over the past 100 chapters or so, i have started becoming more and more annoyed at this story for how ridiculously, insanely long it is taking for the MC to tier up. 450+ chapters and the dude is still tier 0? Seriously? Reading the authors note about a time skip to tier 1 was like a soothing balm for me. FINALLY. To be honest, i find it a bit absurd to take this long, this many chapters, for the MC to tier up just one time. This dude has 9+ more tiers to go? At this rate we are looking at what, 5 more years of writing this story for the MC to accomplish that? Also, i found it extremely tiring that the MC has been 'preparing to tier up' and 'tempering' for literally a hundred and fifty chapters. I really like this story, but wow, get it over with already!.... I fully recognize that i sound overly critical here, but i want to point out that these are basically my only complaints about this story. I'm here, paying to read it, because i have gained immense enjoyment from doing so. Although i have complaints, i also find many positives to this story as well. Perhaps other commenters will consider me a complainer or whatever but i feel like adding my two cents may result in a qualitative improvement of the storyline.... Anyways, thanks for reading my thoughts

I honestly was hoping to see Priam hit domain 2 before tier up. If any champion has a chance, its him. His soul has grown like an apophyocryphal. Kazuki almost hit t3 weapons before his.

He is almost certainly going to kill the 2nd terror before tier-1, so we will probably see king priam soon.

The skull temple would trigger a high tribulation, but it looks like he is already going to trigger it with Domain 2. . . so he might as well. I wonder how much time he will have from the time the high tribulation is triggered to the time it arrives. Kazuki used some treasure or system reward to delay his. Priam doesn't have such an ability to delay it, so he would need to act very quickly to get many things done in the short gap of time before tier-1. The ultimate flex would be somehow getting ACE 2 before his high-tribulation ends.

Nirvana seems impossible right now. According to the phoenix that spoke to him, Priam needs to evolve his Pyro concept to tier-2 before he can attempt it, that means the earliest it can happen is during his high tribulation. If Priam evolves/merges his concepts, that will trigger a high tribulation, then he can die during the tribulation and get nirvana. That seems to be the only way he can get it technically at tier-0. . . just barely. I actually think that might be the most optimal path for him that gets the most benefits, but the author may have something else in mind for his tier-1 advancement.

The things I most want to see while in tier-0 are 1) getting the [ageless] title 2) Fighting and killing Sumstreh. I really want this to happen before tier-1. I think it is particularly important for Priam's myth that this be done at tier-0. 3) the fights against the rest of the Valaryth terrors and the bonuses for becoming a king after he kills the 2nd terror. 4) One more big upgrade purchase for Logarhythm so that it will be better prepared for it's upcoming tribulation. On that topic, it would be cool to see Logarhythm's upcoming tribulation before hitting tier-1. 5) It seems like Priam plans to do one last Tempering before his high tribulation. For the Energy gate, I really think he needs to use either [Golden Meridians] or [Osmosis]. The ultimate energy is aether, so there is no better option than those two for tempering his energy gate. I would also like to see him temper Tribulation Hunter, possibly as the final skill to complete his tempering, but that should definitely wait until he is tier-1.

Nirvana, use most of the damn rewards that he is hoarding, the rank up of Aether manipulation, obviously the fight with his mentor, whatever body tempering he does, spending his sun points and possibly getting every bronze title he can get before his tier up🫡

Well since a timeskip is coming here are some things that I'd like Priam to do! If possible offscreen: - Improve [Aetherist - Gold] to [Aetherist - Legendary]. It's been a very long time (297 chapters to be exact) since Priam got it at Gold so he should be able to do it. - Hack the Skull Temple once more, only alone now. - Space Resistance recast (I still think recasting is too broken. Like for example Priam needs Breath Unity to [Ideal Asphyxia Resistance - Epic] right? But if he recasts [Asphyxia Resistance - Rare] with: Breath Sage + Breath Concept + dying of Asphyxia + HEO + LiH. Priam should be able to make it Ideal Rare and then he could use 'Parent Skill of Ideal Quality' to automatically make it Ideal Epic) - [Ideal Molt] Sna knows this skill (she used it during Back in Time), so there should be no reason for her to not teach it to Priam, unless Priam doesn't want to learn it. - The Ideal Skill the Gaeshert promised Priam for letting him use the Sun Shop. Unless I misremember I don't think Priam learnt it so no reason not to. - Use the 20 Necro Core (T2) that Rohan gave Priam for something! - Unlock a few new Resistances (Torsion, Memory Manipulation, etc.). In particular [Wind Resistance] which Priam couldn't unlock before because his Constitution was sealed. - Unlock a few Bronze Titles more as T0 now that it's his last chance (I feel this is a bit 'giving Priam more titles despite already having a massive amount of them' but at the same time it just feels weird that between 3 other Champions + Sna (particularly Sna) there isn't even 1 Bronze Title Priam can't unlock) Whoa that was a bigger list than I expected... Well I hope it wasn't a bother to read --- Also I am going to throw a prediction: Priam will either choose +200 free stats points as one of his rewards for his Tribulations, and so managing to get Vivacity to 1k (for Mythic Jack of All Trades) Or Priam will use the first Merit of Jack or All Trades to both lower his Constitution (so it's easier to farm and unlock Resistances) and optimize his stats Uh... And now that I see the title of the Chapter I think it'd be really intelligent of Priam to use Sun Points to recruit some torturers, you know, people whose job is to think of ways to kill Priam creatively.

Also while we’re at it - if I understand how the Hideout works correctly then Priam should give it a go. He obviously won’t make it anywhere near as far as Jasmine but he does have the Phantom skill, Trap Detection, and Unity with Mist. Low hanging fruit rewards? And some stealth training? Even if that isn’t the focus of his build, it’s an aspect of it that he has trained. And it makes sense with his wanting to “climb every mountain” and do well in multiple areas as opposed to his fellow champions who seemingly each have specialities He should be able to get Wind Resistance or whatever it was with Kazuki’s help now Ask Sna about any bronze titles or ideal skills that are easy to acquire in T0. Ideal Molt for example even if simply for contributing to him collecting ideal skills Getting 6 legendary skills at T0? I feel like that should be possible now with how many deaths he has had and with additional Iconoclast merit Additional Movement Virtuoso levels, as well as ideal upgrades for Balance, Iron Marathon, Valaryth Swimming, and Glide Last thing… I know Priam is really attached to learning the spear… but with all these resistances and a kinetic skill it kinda makes no sense that he doesn’t do more hand to hand combat 😭 and he has Louis. Let Priam get an Unarmed Combat skill or something. I feel like in most big battles his spear had either been lost or broken anyways

Use Phantom advisors Farm/spend sunpoints (+hunt necro drag for blood%) Draconic atavism at 5% (10% after skip maybe) Complete god legacy quest - Iconoclast next merits? Create reusable/better cores with mythic skill Use merit tree refund token (Refund mist merits?) Farm some non combat titles Some ideas: Give system to log-a-rhythm (with soul piece?) Conquer the moon? (Not on his own but force dome guardians into his army sent them out to the other domes)

If Esmee is sticking around Oasis until at least the reunion then I feel that Priam should farm Probability Manipulation resistance. Pretty sure he already has all the prerequisites for ideal epic. Just needs 19 levels. And it would make sense to use that for the chaos gate. I’m sure Priam could find a way to get Thaal to help with tempering for that

Now that I think about it, trials are probably a lot more useful than just training. There’s a theatrical element to a trial that could be good for a person’s story. Like the colosseum and participating in tournaments compared to casually sparring.

It would also be interesting to see Priam returning to Proxima with the other champions to talk to Prometheus, giving him the promised methods of physical tempering and racial evolution, and perhaps that's where Esmee undergoes her racial transformation. Prometheus' scientists seem to have already created a way to do it. In addition to the conversations I mentioned earlier, it would be interesting to learn more about Prometheus' concepts and titles.

I loved the chapters, but one thing I'd like to see before level 1 is a conversation between the champions about titles, which ones each one has and what they are, their merits, and which ones are possible to acquire quickly. It doesn't necessarily have to be new titles for Priam, but that would be cool too, but for the others as well. One thought of mine would be Jasmine, Esmee, and Kazuki completing the five tortures with Osires' help. I'm also curious about a conversation about concepts and their applications. We've already seen Priam's perspective on his concepts, but what do his friends think, and what does he think about their concepts, and what new concepts would be interesting to address for each one? Sometimes an external opinion can kickstart evolution.

Right, but haven't some characters said that the tiers go fast after you establish your base? I think it was the Aelbes who were explaining why Rohan was durdling around in tier 0 building his foundation when he could've made Transcendent in the same amount of time because of his talent etc...

Just about the only thing I want wrapped up before the reunion is the champions going back to Proxima before it. Both so Priam can give the resources Prometheus asked for(the body refining methods) and the fallout of Kazuki's wife's death.

Either that or arrange one via a Merchant or something. • Aside from that, have it mentioned they have successfully tested the Memory Trap and he unlocked Memory Manipulation Ideal (unless that’s in the works for post tier 1.) • At least one brief mention of Priam buying something or his current amount of Sun points (and the current defense wave they are) (this can also tie with Prometheus visit!) •The Evolution of his Land Owner title,along with the bonuses for Duke and Prince if he unlocked them yet. Confirmation of the date ,since integration . Log-a-rhythm age/progression and their connection (could also briefly mention Dishunu visiting from time to time to check on it) • Moonie stats as a Guardian and her development (bonding moment for Esmee and Rose? Father talk lol) • A PoV of Arnold and his high tribulation (doesn’t need to be the trib,just that he has determined that he won’t beat Phoenix Prince and has tiered up) • Kala,Tyr and Eve preparing for the reunion. • Killing Sumstreh • the Merit tree for Phoenix. (Priam using the merit token or hinting use of that damn merit token) • confirmation on skills and evolutions that Priam has that he hasn’t yet unlocked the ideal version but wants to ( cof cof Smooth Scales + glide , Runic Language, Matrix Dodge, Frozen Meditation, Divination Intercepton(high evo For cipher later?) and Asphixia) • Space resistance Recast (?) • Can we get the screen for Tribulation Heroic Strike? And the what were their Ideal Req? • Ageless Title / Senescence Resistance ( could buy the blueprint from the sunshop to start )

Not to be *that guy* but we are finally getting another minor time skip and it brings us to the precipice of Tier 1. There are 10 Tiers. This is chapter 455. The pacing needs to increase because I honestly don’t trust authors to continue stories for too many years. So so many drop and it feels like a knife to the heart
