I am going to make kind of an odd suggestion. Kurosawa made a propaganda film during WWII called The Most Beautiful. I found this a fascinating and revealing movie because of its positivity in contrast to anti-Japanese propaganda films of Hollywood -- especially cartoons like Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips or Scrap the Japs (a Popeye film). I really think that the contrast is telling and can lend itself to interesting analysis.

The Bad Sleep Well! This is actually my favorite Kurosawa film. I love psychological revenge films where a person sets out to ruin someone's life without physically harming them ( eg The Gift and Promising Young Woman), and this is the best of those.

High and Low! It’s an absolute masterclass in blocking actors, particularly in the first half, and as others suggested, a police procedural that influenced much of the genre. One of my favourites!

Either Red Beard or Ikiru. You covered the Samurai epics with RAN and the genre is sufficiently celebrated. Red Beard is probably his most emotionally poignient film and features the best performance of Toshiro Mifune's career. Ikiru is also deeply moving and one of the most beautiful black and white films I've ever seen.

My choice would be Seven Samurai, one of the greatest action movies ever. But I’ll put forth another film as well, a lesser known one called Stray Dog, which was a detective thriller starring Mifune and Shimura that he did in the years immediately following WWII.

I honestly find Kurosawa so fucking boring. The only movie I could relate to was Ikiru because it's about making the world a better place. It's honestly some of the most painstaking bullshit.

My personal favorite is High and Low. You can definitely see how he influenced Fincher w/ Seven and other films like that. Also Spike Lee just finished doing a remake and I think it’s coming out next year. You could review it before it comes out.
