Malt Shake vs. Regular Shake
🕑 Added 2024-05-19 15:00:10 +0000 UTCI get shakes a lot during the summer. Can anyone describe to me the difference in taste between a malt shake vs a normal shake? Each time I see the malt shake option I want to try it, but I fear it won't be as good as a normal shake. I should just man up and take the risk one day. I was talking to one of my managers about this the other day. He was telling me that if I like whoppers, then I'd likely enjoy a malt shake, but that he personally doesnt care for it nearly as much. I've never had a whopper tho. I wasn't a big sweets child growing up. If anyone could give me a good idea of the difference, it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it will inspire me to take the plunge, or maybe not. lol

Haha...love the way you put it. That's kinda the vibe I got. XD

it’s all about your mood. shakes are more of an upper while malts are more when you’re feeling fuck it.

Wow thank you! You guys are doing a great job of painting the picture for me. And you've convinced me to try it. The angle that sold me was the nostalgia. And this was the one thing that intrigued me about it. Since malts were so in fashion in the 20th century.

Wow thank you! I've been wondering if that taste would be nostalgic for me, due to malts being so popular back in the old days. You have definitely convinced me to try one!

Oh...I'm making a Braums post later. Trust me.

haha hmm interesting. I had a feeling it would be appealing to me due to them being so popular back in the old days. Old school.

never heard of them! ><

Oh....the boys matter.

Malts are good but they DON’T bring the boys to the yard…if that matters…Better not serve me that malt with just a straw either. That’s Like come and see where they’re walking through the bog. That’s mad disrespectful. Just Put a spoon in that shit…damn…

Malts are much better. Try them, you’ll see! It’s like the difference between Nostalghia and Barbie.

You can get either at Braums. My wife always gets a “malted “ as she calls them. Prior post is accurate in the distinction.

I used to work at Baskin Robbins in high school in 1986 and as I recall, to make a milkshake malted, we put in a couple of spoons of a brownish/tan powder. This added kind of a chalky taste like Whoppers candy. It's an odd, almost sour milk, old fashioned taste but weirdly pleasant. It adds a kind of "twang" if that makes any sense. It's mild enough and worth trying. It was very rarely requested. Mostly by the elderly. But it might make you look cool and edgy if people see you drink it. You never know.

The malt adds a certain cloying sweetness. The closest comparison I can think of is like a very mellow caramel. Definitely worth a try, you just close your eyes and imagine yourself in a 50’s style soda shoppe and you’ll ride the wave of golden nostalgia I’m sure 😅

Alright. I will brave it out at the front lines for you all and report back.

Ah okay. Interesting. I wonder why they make such a distinction in advertising for it.

Your posts just get better and better. I like regular shakes I suppose a bit better.

I have learned something here today. I always thought a "malt" was simply a Yankee synonym for "milkshake". Thanks to the miracle of the interwebz, I now know that it's actually milkshake containing "malted milk powder", which apparently thickens things up and add a toasty (or nutty?) flavour. In the interests of science, we the people demand you sample one immediately and give us a detailed Youtube review, with attendant Day Lewis impression. "I drink your malted milkshake. I drink it up!!!" SLLLLURRRP!!

Haven't had any kind of shake in years so I looked it up. https://www.webstaurantstore.com/blog/2598/what-is-a-malt-milkshake.html

I believe the only difference is malted milk powder. It can have a different taste (if the powder is flavored) but the primary difference is it thickens the shake. I have never found it significant enough of a difference to pay for.
