🕑 Added 2024-04-23 22:41:05 +0000 UTCIm seeing Challengers on Thursday. I would love to get a sense of what you guys think of Luca as a director. I’ll be honest…I tend to oppose his work in terms of my taste. I haven’t seen one film of his that didn’t reek of self-aware art house pretention. He overdirects to the point of often losing the humanity in his films. The man had exquisite taste in many areas clearly. Brilliant taste in music and art but…I think he’d be better suited to make Italian perfume ads or something. Production design even. Direct for Versace or Chanel. Not one of his films connects with me, even if I admire aspects of all of his films aesthetically. I’m one of the few who loathed Call Me By Your Name. It still baffles me that people liked it. But yeah…feel free to disagree, or agree. Would love to know your thoughts!

Suspiria had some nice scenes... I mean, I rather have this guy making films than someone like Zack Snyder... that gets hundreds of millions of dlls for his ripoff content... I think Luca might be able to put something together that is truly memorable... we shall see

PS: far from Dario Argento's version doesn't mean that remake is better lol. I just realized it might sounds that way. Never mind.

Can't say much about him cause I only saw Suspiria around its premiere. Overall, I enjoyed the movie (far from Dario Argento's version) but I remember that I didn't like Dakota Johnson's performance - pretentious is a good word to describe it - and something was wrong with editing.

I’m intrigued to see Challengers but I’m not a fan of Guadagnino as a filmmaker or Zendaya as an actress. All of the great directors know how to balance style and substance, but Guadagnino is strictly a style kinda guy. Zendaya seems like a lovely person and she might be a good actress (maybe I’m missing something) but every time I see her in films or TV, it’s like “Oh there’s Zendaya!” I never get a sense that she truly disappears into her roles. It often feels forced to me.

Biggest problem with his films for me is his casting. So many actors are incredibly distracting in the roles

I like him fine. Ive only seen Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria, but am interested in seeing I am Love and A Bigger Splash based on what I've heard about them. I liked CMBYN but thought it was overrated and didn't really understand why it was an Oscar frontrunner at the time. Great performances, beautiful cinematography and a decent story but overall nothing exceptional. Suspiria I'm a little more enthusiastic. I loved its atmosphere and build up. Also loved Swintons commitment to her two roles.

I liked Suspiria... if I don't compare it to the original I do enjoy that one a little bit... but not great. Mostly agree with what you say, he obviously has some good creative talent... but yeah, just doesn't execute well for my taste either... I did not like call me by your name at all...
