Haha yeah. I thought about you a lot watching this. And was thinking that this would be your reaction. XD

I was lucky to see this in a cinema, which was nearly full. Absolutely incredible response and just a fun experience.

Lol that’s just Bollywood, they’ve been killing it this whole century. I’m not an expert, but I highly recommend Bahubali 1&2 if you like that vibe. They should be on Netflix still. And another great (but more serious) Indian historical fiction is Gangs of Wasseypur pt. 1&2, it’s a HUGE mafia saga that goes over 68 years of three families’ power struggles.

Interesting to hear those thoughts. Its fascinating and totally understandable to see how this film has broken through with western audiences. Films like these are made all the time here known as South Indian cinema (maybe we have talked about it before). Hence for me, I had fun watching it, but it also felt like just an another film that I’ve seen countless times before, just more loud. But I will say that these are miles better than any Bollywood action film you’ll ever see (they just remake these movies). Though it was the highest grossing Indian film post pandemic, until another South film released a month later overtook it.

Adding this one to my list!

It's not the most brilliant film I've ever seen by any means. But it's definitely one of the few films this year, that I actually had fun watching.

I was the same way. Trust me...I review movies all the time. I beg for a short runtime to make my life easier for these at times. The runtime for this almost deterred me. But, for me it was fully worth it. It didn't feel long to me. It's a very full and epic type of story that warrants the runtime.

I had seen a few other mentions of this film and a few nights ago I went to look at the details on Netflix, then I saw the run time and I was like 'Nah, not gonna risk three plus hours on it'. (I am really tired of films with unnecessarily long run times at the moment) Also whenever I watch a Bollywood film I am often left underwhelmed. However, I might have to find time to watch this one based on your recommendation.

Oh it's hella fun. Great to watch with friends.

Been meaning to watch it but waiting for when I get get together a few friends to do it. It looks like a blast. I fortunately did get that feeling you're describing from the two films mentioned but I have no doubt RRR will be equally wonderful from everything I've heard.

I thought it was fine, but overhyped. Blockbusters today tend to have a sad energy about them. If they’re original, they’re usually very incompetently made, and if they’re competently made, they’re usually unoriginal. RRR is both well made and original, which is incredibly refreshing. The first dance scene at the palace is one of my favorite scenes all year.  There’s just a lot in it I didn’t need though. Maybe it’s because I’m really new to Tollywood blockbusters but the dramatic slow motion action sequences, songs of which the lyrics directly tell us the subtext of what’s happening, dependence on distracting CG, and generally forced sentiment took me out of it. I didn’t get much out of the story either. Which would usually be fine, it’s a blockbuster after all. But because I thought it was really refreshing in other ways I just wish it pushed a bit more when it came to the writing/themes. Maybe it’s just personal taste but I far prefer those other films you mentioned.
