The trailer for Pearl Harbor. Set to Hans Zimmer’s slow-building “Journey to the Line” and Jon Voight’s rousing interpretation of FDR’s Day of Infamy speech, Pearl Harbor has a masterpiece of a trailer. Whereas Michael Bay’s aesthetic in his films can come off as glib and flashy, in the trailer his images of Americana disrupted by warfare come off as striking and, dare I say, poetic. Which leads me to conclude what I’ve always felt about Michael Bay: that he makes for a better advertiser than a filmmaker. How good is the trailer for Pearl Harbor? It was so good that, for a few months, people believed that the frenetic action-junk movie auteur of Armageddon actually stepped up and made a great war film.

I really like the teaser trailer for Godzilla 2014. The HALO jump sequence is both ominous and beautiful. It also does a really good job of evoking curiosity even though you know it’s just going to be a movie about a giant lizard monster.

My favorite trailers are the ones for Alfred Hitchcock films and the one for Psycho is like a wonderful mini documentary. With his dry wit and horrifying but also humorous descriptions of scenes from the film, he gives an unforgettable tour of the motel and house. It's like listening to the world's most interesting madman and you can't turn away from him. He's just as good of a narrator as he is a director.

Alien (1979) is the undisputed champ. The slow fading in of the title and the montage of the egg and rocky planet surface builds curiosity. Then, the quick montage over the sound of a siren provides a wonderful sense of dread, and gives the viewer a tiny taste of the claustrophobic and grotesque cinematography. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace teaser. Say what you will about the film, but the trailer was fantastic! I remember going to see other movies, just because the Star Wars trailer was playing with it. Nerdgasm after nerdgasm! After so many years of dire anticipation, finally hearing John William’s score up on the big screen, all those iconic Star Wars sound effects, Darth Maul igniting his double-bladed light saber, a whole universe of Star Wars in all its glory—before the dark times, before the Empire!

Fincher had an incredible back to back with The Social Network and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Excellent overall editing of the first and well-deployed editing technique in the second. I love social network a lot but I think that trailer may be worthy of more acclaim. It really achieves the dramatic peak it wants to go to.

Recency bias but the trailer for Jordan Peele’s “Nope” is extraordinary. It gives you an amazing taste of what the movie will be like, including how batshit crazy it might be. But it gives away absolutely zero central plot elements. Perfect trailer.
