I didn't know where it was going for first 40 mins. Then scene with his old commi chef. Then it all fell into place. Mr Coppola is such underrated internal actor if you seen him in Birdy, leaving las Vegas and adaptation. He is always seen as wildman. Special mention to Adam Arkin with the two scenes he had he deserves Oscar. Then the I'm on Fire cover at the end. I fucking cried. Film of the year for me.

Totally agree with you on Cage. It's the commitment to realism that is most effective in a film like this. And yes...I hate the fight club scene as well.

Impressive first film from Michael Sarnoski. I found it to be a moving film about loss and artistry, a solid character drama held together by Cage’s affecting performance. I wouldn’t call what he did a return to form like some people have, but more of a welcome return to naturalism. He doesn’t give the character any eccentric flourishes but rather sinks into the role. Alex Wolff gives a nice supporting performance, showing hidden depths to a hustler. There are missteps that the movie makes (most notably that garish fight club sequence) but overall it’s a pretty good film. It’s nice to see Cage in something that isn’t schlock.

Yeah I thought it had its moments, Nick Cave did a good job, but it kind of uneven, the moments that were supposed to be these big emotional moments fell flat for me and in the end left me a little underwhelmed from how hyped up it was.

It was watchable, but I didn’t think too much of it. I’m probably not enough of a foodie. I almost laughed out loud in the theater at Cage’s “I remember every meal I’ve ever cooked for every person.” Really? You never just threw something together? I’m being unkind. Overall, Cage was good and the movie was fine. The stuff with thinking you appreciate fine art vs. actually appreciating it was smart.

thought Nic’s performance reminded people that he can actually act and be subtle when needed. the movie didn’t blow my mind, but it’s a good flip on what we’d expect from a revenge movie, I was pleasantly surprised
