For me it's The Age of Innocence. It definitely received praise when it came out but to me it should be considered among his masterpieces. Also agree with those above mentioning After Hours and The Last Temptation of Christ.

It has its flaws, but it’s definitely one of Scorsese’s most powerful, deeply felt films. And the Peter Gabriel score is incredible.

"Shutter Island". That's a great genre movie and one of my faves of his. Honestly, I like it better than his gangster stuff or the overrated "Taxi Driver".

Yea I rewatched Aviator recently and it's def flawed but I think I just had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't suck. It's been many years since I've seen BOTD but I remember it being kinda weird in an interesting way, which Scorsese just doesn't do anymore, and of course it stars Nicholas Cage which never hurts in that regard heh

I actually was just watching an interview with Willem Dafoe last night on that one. I need to revisit it.

I would consider The Last Temptation of Christ to be underrated in that it doesn’t get talked about nearly enough as his other major films. But I don’t think it’s thought of as one of his weaker movies either.

Mean Streets. A portrayal of common street thugs more raw than a giant cut of steak. I'd argue that it's the dirtiest, grittiest film he's ever made. Excellent low budget cinematography and probably my favorite Harvey Keitel performance.

Of course this whole discussion hinges on what an underrated Scorsese means. The public doesn’t think about Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore or King of Comedy or After Hours, but cinefiles do. I would argue that at this point The Departed is underrated by Film Twitter despite winning best picture.

The Color of Money. I believe it was dismissed as Scorsese taking a studio job to get back on track, but he didn’t mail it in. It’s Scorsese through and through. Helps to have an awesome Newman, and Cruise playing a character he was perfect for, and good supporting work by Mastrantonio.

Bringing Out the Dead was pretty interesting. I also think The Aviator was quite good for a biopic

After Hours is definitely his most underrated, never seen Scorsese as surreal and weird as this, and the style and tones he mixes is incredible to see
