I think I am reluctantly going to watch this movie tonight to see for myself just how bad it really is.

Reminds me of Kids how that director had a fondness to make his young cast do certain things on set. Wonder if that movie would pass now because it seems everyone’s really starting to speak out on sexualizing children. Cuties came out months ago but the negative press and public reaction didn’t start happening until a week or two after the guy from Rick and Morty got called out for his weird attempt at black humor. Wonder if this might be a natural chain reaction that started with Dan Harmon and carried over to Cuties or if it’s Netflix trying to capitalize on where people’s attention are at

I have little interest in watching it. Regardless of its content, it looks like generic, forgettable Netflix trash. Initially, I found the premise of the film and some of the movie posters/trailers to be extremely distasteful. Then I heard that the director was making a statement about how sexualization of children is wrong. I did a little more research into the film (still have not watched it yet). Based on my readings and the reviews of some people, it seems like there are several scenes in the movie which sexualize children or depict them in adult situations. If it was the director's intent to make a film demonizing the sexualization of children then it sounds like she did a really terrible job at doing so because her film sexualizes children. Now the film has become stuck in the middle of a political war where you're a "right-wing internet troll" if you hate the movie and some of the movie apologists are disingenuous in praising the accolades of the film just because they want to counter-signal the film's detractors.

I have not watched it and have no interest. I've seen clips of it online and it just felt so wrong. I'm pretty open to hearing creators out with mature themes if there is a story to be told, but some of the choices made were far too gratuitous to justify. I'm not sure who exactly the target demographic was, but it is clear who the group of people benefiting from this are and it makes me nauseous.

I have no intention of watching it, not just the content seems like it lacks tact but also cause I think the controversy around the original marketing was itself disgusting marketing by Netflix. Like someone at Netflix made the choice to start that gross campaign knowing it would insight backlash just to get the movie in the public eye and try and flip the narrative after the fact. I don't want to reward something like that.

Well, it's complicated. The film is French, so I blame the filmmakers. But Netflix agreed to use it in their programming, so they are also to blame. I'm sure there are many people we could point fingers at.

It doesn't surprise me. I've seen some messed up things in movies but this is something else. All I gotta say is I'm humiliated to live in a society where making this level of exploitation mainstream entertainment is okay. Also, Stand With Sophie has been happening at the same time which doesn't help the industry either. Screw you too, you corporate American insects!
