I just watched this film today and really do not know what to make of it yet. I didn't read the book (though I don't think that should matter when watching a film). Part of me wants to praise the film for being so complex and intelligent that it flies over my head. However, the other part of me feels that it is tryhard, pretentious, and self-indulgent. I appreciate when directors do not spoonfeed their audience and trust them to be smart enough to understand a film but what good is a movie if it is so complex that it alienates its audience because the overwhelming majority of them do not 'get it'? Ultimately, I feel I will need to let it simmer for now and then rewatch the film at a later date.
