What really strikes me about The Happening and Lady in the Water is that Shyamalan is so dead-set about certain ideas or concepts, but also terrible at voicing or depicting them. This incoherent or unsuccessful execution honestly reminds me of all my worst tendencies when I was first studying film production. His final cut on most films prior to The Visit feel like a first cut, with plotting, characterization, and motivations betraying a distinct lack of... what anybody but Shyamalan is like. He's a poor student of human behavior, to make a generous read. Since I am a life-long Shyamalan hater, what I say can be rationalized, but I don't feel off the mark when I say that the problem goes deeper than him being an uneven "practitioner of the craft." The dude sees the world through a distorted window, and I don't feel qualified to make a more clinical judgement.

I watched this movie in anticipation of this episode and immediately had to tell my friends that this was the worst movie I have ever seen. I *hate* Science Douchebag Mark Wahlberg. I hate that he is a science teacher who doesn't believe in science. The *point* of science education at that level is to excite kids' interest in science, to get them to examine the world and to give them the tools to understand it. Save the talk about the mysterious and unknowable forces of nature for philosophy or religion courses. Can we actually perceive the whole universe in a scientific way? Probably not, we're humans and not truth-seeking engines. But the point is to make the attempt! Not to just give up in the face of nature! No science teacher would ever make this argument to his class. Blah!
