FULL WATCHALONG ~ FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2
🕑 Added 2025-05-25 05:13:41 +0000 UTCFriday the 13th Part 2 (1981) is where the actual legend of Jason Voorhees finally lumbers onto the scene—sort of. No hockey mask yet, but the potato sack with one eye-hole? Iconic in its own, deeply creepy, hillbilly-murderer way. This sequel picks up the torch from the first film and promptly sets it on fire in the woods, introducing a burlap-headed Jason who has apparently grown up, bulked up, and developed a flair for creative revenge.
We’re back at Camp Crystal Lake—or near it, because no one in this franchise ever learns—and we’ve got a fresh crop of counselors-in-training, all of whom fall neatly into the slasher victim starter pack: the jokester, the sex couple, the final girl, the dude in a wheelchair (who gets one of the wildest kills in the franchise), and a bunch of others who exist solely to get stabbed, slashed, garroted, or creatively impaled.
What makes Part 2 notable—besides the fact that it kicks off Jason’s career as a full-time murderer—is its surprisingly effective tension. Director Steve Miner tightens the screws more confidently than the first film did, with better pacing, stronger kills, and a more defined sense of dread. There’s a lo-fi charm to how rough around the edges it still is: no glossy cinematography, no big-budget polish—just a lot of heavy breathing, crunching leaves, and very poor decisions involving barns and open doors.
Amy Steel is a standout as Ginny, the film’s Final Girl, and she actually thinks during the climax—rare in this genre. Her turn using Jason’s twisted mommy issues against him is one of the smarter psychological moments in a franchise not exactly known for its nuance.
Friday the 13th Part 2 doesn’t reinvent the slasher wheel, but it sharpens it. It’s bloodier, more confident, and lays the groundwork for the endless sequels that followed. It’s the moment Jason stops being a spooky campfire tale and starts becoming a full-blown horror icon. Burlap sack and all.

Turns out that guy did stay in that wheelchair the rest of his life.

I saw Friday the 13th VHS when I went to rental stores growing up but was never a fan back then. Only after watching some reactions the last few years did I start to appreciate how INSANE they can get. I also love Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason X and you'll have a great time when you get to those. Some trivia for this one: Adrienne King (Alice) had numerous encounters with an obsessive fan after the first film which escalated into a stalker case so she quit acting until 2010. Jason in this film is dressed to look exactly the same as the hooded, burlap sack killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown from 1976. The only difference is that the burlap sack he wears has only one eye hole, and his shirt has a slightly different plaid design.
