FULL WATCHALONG ~ THE MASK OF ZORRO
🕑 Added 2025-01-20 05:50:24 +0000 UTCThe Mask of Zorro (1998) is the dashing, swashbuckling spectacle that dares you not to swoon every time Antonio Banderas twirls his sword like he’s auditioning for a salsa competition. You’ve got Anthony Hopkins as the original masked hero, passing the proverbial torch (or sword, rather) to a younger upstart—and if that’s not a recipe for adventure, I don’t know what is. Catherine Zeta-Jones practically lights up the screen with her every entrance, serving serious “don’t mess with me” energy while also being the perfect foil for Banderas’s roguish charm.
From the moment the film opens, it’s all whip-crack sword fights, acrobatic stunts, and that gloriously over-the-top flourish of a “Z”—because when you’re a legendary hero, subtlety is overrated. The plot hits all the right beats of revenge, redemption, and romance without ever feeling like it’s slowing down to catch its breath. Even the training sequences—where Hopkins tries to transform Banderas from scruffy bandit to suave vigilante—are so much fun you almost wish the movie would just let them banter and fence for another hour.
But let’s be real: the most iconic part of this movie might just be the chemistry. The banter crackles, the flirtation sizzles, and the tension in every sword duel is almost as sharp as the blades themselves. Add in a sweeping score and enough dashing hero poses to fill a 90s action poster store, and you’ve got a film that’s brimming with nostalgia in all the best ways.
In short, The Mask of Zorro is a glorious throwback to a time when heroes wore capes (or at least flowing black garb), romance and swordsmanship went hand-in-hand, and carving an initial into your enemy’s clothing was the ultimate power move. If you’re in the mood for derring-do, quippy dialogue, and a parade of dramatic entrances, look no further—Zorro’s got you covered. And he’ll do it with style.

I honestly don't remember this flick being this decent, but maybe it was just because of what was released around it. Or maybe because it was released after the pulp bonanza we had in the early 90s or the Banderas + Robert Rodriguez burnout that we just went through. Who knows? But also, see what happens if you call my main man Bra'tac Don F Murray Abraham one more time. https://i.imgur.com/H7bxcSk.mp4

Kevin here - fuck Mel..but I still love this film

I wouldn’t say it’s overrated. Great movie. Knowing it’s basically fiction masquerading as fact kinda cut the realness out of it for me. Plus knowing Mel is a PoS in real life makes it hard to root for him nowadays lol.
